Soon, the media were knocking at Raffi's door. Raffi's career in childrens' music started when his mother-in-law invited him to sing at her nursery school. She recognized his ability to connect with the kids in an authentic way and she suggested he do a recording for young children, because she felt there was a lack of quality music available for their age group. His debut album, Singable Songs for the Very Young, was irresistible. Within a few months, Raffi went from performing in front of small audiences to selling out theatre venues. The ensuing string of Raffi albums and DVDs has sold over 15 million copies in Canada and the US, including more than 3 million "Songs to Read"� books. The 3 albums included are "Singable Songs for the Very Young", The Corner Grocery Store", and More Singable Songs.

Raffi Singable Songbook has an index by album, suggested songs for beginning players, and guitar and ukelele chords. The 2nd Raffi Songbook uses one comprehensive index, omits ukelele fingerings, and includes suggestions for rhythm instruments. The first book's appearance is enhanced tremendously by the addition of paintings and drawings by Canadian children. The second book, in spite of attractive borders and headings, is comparatively dull visually. Musical arrangements are simple, considering the often complex rhythms employed. These songs, in transcription as well as in recording, bring out the child in singers and listeners of all ages. There are silly songs, spiritual songs, curious songs, companionable songs, instructive songs, and songs of other cultures. All make a joyful noise. Great Songbook for little kid singalongs

Raffi's positive spirit shines on his albums - which I recommend for your kids. These songs bear repetition well, which is good because your kids will want to hear and sing them a lot. Traditionals, some updated in the folk tradition of old tune, new words, and some new tunes.
And it's a good book for learning guitar - kids love singing the same song again and again, and that's a good way to learn!

Great for young and old

I bought this compilation primarily to get the sheet music for "Robin in the Rain." The book is packed with great tunes. Here in the Pacific Northwest we see lots of robins in the rain as they enjoy the worms that the rain drives out. My troup of ukulele playing performers has added "Robin in the Rain" to our tune list for performances at senior residences and children's groups. We'll add more from this collection. Buy one if you can find it.
