From the Back Cover
"Go to New York City and help those boys."

When David Wilkerson heard those words in his heart late one night as he glanced at a picture in Life magazine, he was dumbfounded. The boys in question were members of a violent gang and on trial for murder. He, on the other hand, was a country preacher settled comfortably in a little mountain church in Pennsylvania. What could God possibly expect him to accomplish--in New York City, of all places?

But the thought would not let him go--and his life and the lives of countless despairing teens were changed forever on account of it.

This is the riveting story of the founding of Teen Challenge, an inner-city ministry that today maintains residential and crisis counseling centers around the globe. But even more, it is a story of how the most unlikely people can hear--and follow--God's call to do the impossible.

This 45th anniversary edition includes a brand-new foreword by Charles Colson and two new epilogues celebrating Teen Challenge and reflecting on fifty years of following God's lead.

"David's story will touch your life in a way few books can."--from the foreword by Charles W. Colson

David Wilkerson (1931-2011) was the founder of Teen Challenge and World Challenge and longtime senior pastor of Times Square Church. He authored more than thirty books, including the bestselling The Cross and the Switchblade and Knowing God by Name. He ministered to people worldwide, and on the day of his death, he was still ministering.

David also cofounded Times Square church in New York City. Of his many books, perhaps the most influential has been The Cross and the Switchblade, which sparked interest about baptism in the Holy Spirit from both Protestant and Catholic circles.

John and Elizabeth Sherrill have authored or coauthored numerous bestsellers with sales in excess of fifty million, including The Hiding Place, The Cross and the Switchblade, and God's Smuggler. From AudioFile
Paul Michael recounts the lives of teenage gangs in New York City in the '60s. He has just the right amount of drama and inflection in his voice as he characterizes street kids who are addicted to drugs and crime. This is the true story of David Wilkerson, an Assemblies of God preacher who left a little country church to go to the streets of New York. There he faces life-threatening situations and hears heart-wrenching stories as he seeks to bring change into the lives of these kids through faith in God. The book tells the story of the beginning of Teen Challenge, a thriving ministry today. Paul Michael does an excellent job creating a believable drama of God's work through the vision of just one man. N.L. AudioFile 2008, Portland, Maine-- Copyright AudioFile, Portland, Maine

One of the Best Books I Have Ever Read
By Mrs. Susan Seifert
I am not a reader, but I received this book a couple of months ago in audio form and listened to it over and over again. This is one of the best books I have ever heard/read, so I am ordering them now to give away. I think Christians, for the most part, have no idea of the power of God and how He is working in various places, such as in David Wilkerson's life in NYC when these events took place. Most of us are content to just go to a church meeting on Sunday and read our Bibles occasionally, but God has so much more for us if we will listen. God worked in a supernatural way in 'The Cross and the Switchblade'. God can work like that in any place where people are willing to lay down their own lives for the sake of the kingdom of God. This book is very encouraging and faith building. Although I don't necessarily agree with David Wilkerson in every area theologically, there are a lot of good things to unpack in this book that we can learn from.

Good, predictable book
By GeoCitizen411
I read this book because a homeless women whom I've grown to really like a great deal, has a real burning love for homeless teens. She made me promise I would read it. It is a very easy read and wonderful story of how the Lord steps in to help those who walk by faith in taking on what appears impossible to others. It is also a very strong testimonial to how one person can make a tremendous difference in the world.

My most important take away from this book isn't "to trust God", that is a given, but to not give up on teens. So many people have good intentions in working with teens, the homeless and other disadvantaged group. Like the seed thrown on poor soil they start with a flurry and wither in the competition from other things in their life. I have worked with many disadvantaged and the worst thing you can do is show your face and then pull back on your commitment.

The Cross and the Switchblade really brings to light the importance of not giving up on this group. As I write this during the Christmas season where good meaning people bubble over with generosity, I'm deeply saddened because the people whom get the attention during this season are forgetten the other 11 months of the year.

I would recommend this book to any one he believes a social situation is hopeless and they can't make any difference.

One of a kind book. A Must Read.
By Dep
I read this a long time ago and decided to re-read it now. I'm 60 years old now and accepted Christ as a 7 or 8 year old at a David Wilkerson "rally" back in the 60's in Pittsburgh where Nicky Cruz gave his testimony. The Holy Spirit power moved through Wilkerson (and Cruz) like I've never seen before or since. There was no way I could leave that meeting without accepting Christ, despite my pride. I thank God for these two men. This book captures so much of that; you will feel the Holy Spirit speak through this account of the early days of his ministry. For those that do not know Christ as savior, or even Christians that are still unaware of the power of the Holy Spirit, some accounts in the book will seem ridiculous, impossible, made up. I assure you they are not. If you had sat through one of his meetings you would have felt a pull and power that, without it, these events could not have happened like they did. As you read, pray for that power to reveal the truth to you. I pray for more current day "watchman" like Wilkerson to arise and reach people for Christ.
