Review
“Yamada’s introduction to Zen is a welcome and dense primer that has much to offer novices as well as experienced practitioners.” (Publishers Weekly))

“An authoritative, convincing and readable insider's view of the path of awakening, by one of the great Zen Masters of the twentieth century.” (Ruben L.F. Habito, author of Healing Breath)

“As Yamada clearly enunciates, the heart of Zen is realization and actualization, or awakening and practice, in more familiar terms. Zen in the West is still learning that this awakening/practice is timeless, nothing but the endless journey taken together with all suffering beings, not an end result. Yamada continues to take this journey with each of us, step by step, forever and ever and ever. He bows to us, and we are moved to bow in return.” (Mark Unno, author, Shingon Refractions)

Great book for practitioners.

People of any or no religion can learn to practice the "experience based spirituality" so beautifully described in these pages
By Amazon Customer
Although Zen: The Authentic Gate was written in the late 1970s, the book addresses questions that are both timeless and contemporary. People of any or no religion can learn to practice the "experience based spirituality" so beautifully described in these pages. Zen history is compassionately woven with anecdotes in a conversational style that speaks to the heart.

It is a very good book for beginner students who have questions about Zen ...
By Katherine See-Calacday
The book explained the Zen practice in the Sanbo-Zen tradition, the hows and why of zazen and sesshin. It is a very good book for beginner students who have questions about Zen and maybe shy to ask their teacher. Or that questions they haven't thought of are answered by this book. And many aspects of Zen and how it relates to life are answered. As this book is a result of years of dokusan (private meeting) of Yamada Kuon Roshi with his many students. So this books helps very much in the Zen practice.
