Long on the JavaScript, Perfect on the PHP and XML, and Just Right with Ajax

Ajax for Dummies by Steve Holzner relayed information on JavaScript, XML, PHP, CSS, and Ajax--even delving into some basic CSS for those non-designing programmers. Holzner enlightens us to the intricacies of Ajax, starting with the XMLHttpRequest object, including listings of the object's methods and properties. From there, Holzner shows how to use Ajax methods to access information in text files, PHP scripts, and XML files: a whole chapter is dedicated to XML and Ajax; another chapter, PHP.

What is Ajax? Ajax gets behind-the-scenes data from the server to use in your Web page on the fly without you having to refresh the page or without the page flickering annoyingly. For instance, imagine if every time you entered a letter into the Google search field, the whole screen flickered and refreshed as Google searched for a list of words with those same starting letters. I bet you would avoid Google at all cost if that were the case. Thankfully, there's Ajax.

Back to the book, the PHP section appeared friendly, with a light, yet complete introduction to PHP. Holzner shows how the PHP server-side script can code XML data for use with Ajax. He articulates on the Get and Post methods for sending data to the server-side program, and explains how to use a server side script to access outside domains such as Google.

Ajax frameworks take center stage in the book as well. The author provides his own framework, and throughout the frameworks introduced, sprinklings abound of framework events and functions such as drag and drop, pop-up menus, and downloading images behind the scene. One framework even provides examples for making a drag-and-drop shopping cart (without the payment gateway). The Livegrid framework allows you to display and sort table data fetched behind the scenes.

The CSS and Ajax component provides flashes of insight into how to show and hide a menu with Ajax. Although some rather basic CSS finds itself in this section, the overall content engages the reader nicely. More bluntly, this chapter is more of a CSS introduction than an Ajax--CSS tutorial. The JavaScript section, too, lines up as an introduction to the ins-and-outs of basic programming. What else would one expect from a Dummie's book?

Be forewarned, the reader should have some basic HTML and CSS knowledge before delving into this book (and preferably, HTML5 and CSS3, in that order). Best yet, the reader would have a background in JavaScript already (after reading HTML5 and CSS3), even on a rudimentary scale. Most ideally, however, the reader could have background knowledge of PHP, as the PHP chapter in this book makes for a nice refresher to those with introductory PHP skills.

Overall, Holzner wrote a compelling book, drifting from the basics to the complex in a straightforward, easy to follow manner. I would recommend it for people relatively new to Ajax or for people interested in learning more about frameworks.

An OK book harmed by many typos

A maybe 3 stars. The typos are amazing. It's as if Mr. Holzner never looked at the finished product. Here's some lines from Page 81:

What is this? (And this is one of MANY MANY). Was there even a proofreader? Wiley People: Hire someone already. Many typos, like every page is filled with typos. Headings in the middle of text, just weird stuff. bgcolor when it should be bgColor; not a biggie but indicative. There clearly was no attempt at all to review the book before publication.

Ajax for Dummies has SERIOUS ERRORS

I started reading through the Ajax for Dummies book hoping I could get something valuable out of it, but ended up only in frustration and lost a great amount of trust in the book series.

Learning how to write JavaScript functions was not much of an issue, with a typo here and there, and I actually got something out of the second chapter of the book. The examples seemed to match up to my level of understanding, and the modules actually worked!

Seeing the first Ajax example displayed at the beginning of the book should have been a decent caveat for me to consider doing research elsewhere, because this happened to be the example that started the downward spiral from understanding the code to not understanding why every coding example didn't work and begging the Web for answers. This very example did not work no matter how many times I went through it to look for errors and even comparing it to the online downloadable files STRAIGHT FROM THE COMPLIMENTARY WEBSITE!

I decided to continue on after a wasted evening battling with the script. This only led me to believe that every single example in the book has some kind of debilitating error, because something as simple as connecting a function to an image event did not do anything.

As told by the other frustrated designers anxious to delve into the power of Ajax, this book is a severe breaker of trust that contains a staggering amount of errors right from the get-go, and needs to be properly edited for a new edition that people can actually learn and gain experience from. Now stepping down off my soapbox!

good book for those with good financial knowledge.

There are a number of very positive reviews of this book.I don't doubt that they are honest reviews, however, unless you have a good understanding of the stock market and other forms of high finance you will not be able to enjoy this book to the fullest. In addition you will need the ability to retain an endless parade of investor names, lawyers and law firms, wall st. companies and wall st terms and concepts to fully understand the myriad of details in this book.

Overall I enjoyed the book, but I would not recommend it to someone like me who does not have a high degree of financial savvy.

The epilogue of Barbarians at the Gate: The Fall of RJR Nabisco reveals the impressive, surprising fact that the book was researched and written by its two authors, Bryan Burroughs and John Helyar, during a “manic” eight months. The story they tell, too, is manic: the six-week stretch of negotiations and execution of a $25 billion Wall Street deal––at the time of the deal it was the the largest leveraged buyout ever performed.

For all of the dollars involved, Barbarians at the Gate is not a story of economics and finance; it is a book about human behavior and politics.

The tale begins with the calculated maneuverings that facilitated Ross Johnson’s ascent to RJR Nabisco’s chief executive office. To tell the story, the authors conducted “marathon” interviews with Johnson and his coterie. They had access even to the company psychologist, “Ross is addicted to action, to a constant dynamism... He can’t always see what effect that has on others.” It is perhaps not the most desirable trait for a CEO, but it is invaluable for a protagonist.

Johnson’s proclivities lead him to a Wall Street negotiating table. The authors describe the bustling 1980s financial environment aptly with the aid of Alice in Wonderland: “[Johnson’s team] had stepped through the looking glass to a place where reality was suspended, where the old numbers, the old rules, the old financial reasoning, simply didn’t apply. Money was paper, and paper was money.”

Johnson and readers both are beguiled by the irrelevance of money on Wall Street. Deals in Wonderland are not driven by money, we discover, but by something bankers call “ancillary benefits,” which seems to be a combination of fame, relationship leverage, revenge, and claptrap. When one bank offers another a fee of $125 million to take a back seat in the deal, it is regarded by the recipients as “the most insulting offer.”

While the bankers’ motives are perplexing, their means are riveting. Barbarians at the Gate is an immaculate telling of an intense battle. The authors have performed remarkable reconstruction of behind-the-scenes dialogue. They capture wisecracks and witticisms, errors of arithmetic, grousing, and flippancy. At times they go beyond dialogue, even reproducing bankers’ soliloquies and silent curses.

Because of the authors’ efforts, readers are privy to the origins, alliances, and rivalries within a group of leading mergers and acquisitions experts with the humdrum alias, “The Group.” We see how Wall Street heavyweights leverage partisanship, manipulate media, and threaten their peers––all to win the deal.

For all of the bankers’ emphatic efforts to win, the climax of Barbarians at the Gate reveals the competition to be melodrama, even ironic. The winner, Henry Kravis, gets “modest returns;” the loser, Peter Cohen, says to his colleague “We’ll get the next one,” in a huff. Twenty-five years later, both are filthy rich.

Barbarians at the Gate is a great tale for anyone interested in business or financial history.

Fred Dalton Thompson is also great as the president of American Express

Very interesting and entertaining true story of a failed takeover attempt in the 1980s. The characters are what make it fascinating; Ross Johnson, Henry Kravis, James Robinson, Teddy Forstmann, etc.

I actually met Theodore Forstmann when I was a teenager and he was in his early twenties, at the Apawamis Club in Rye, NY. I remember it because he got hit with a golf ball. Weird, huh?

Watch the movie also; as with all movies there are some liberties taken but the complete absurdity of the whole event is very skillfully portrayed. It has James Garner as Ross Johnson and it's a natural role for the recently deceased actor. Fred Dalton Thompson is also great as the president of American Express. Worth the time to watch it!

Mr. Hornung's new hero is not a committer but a preventer of crime, one whose mission to quote his own words, is to busy himself "in saving people from themselves while they're still worth saving, in that prevention which is not only better than cure, but the vital principle of modern therapeutics in every other direction. In keeping good material out of the prison at all cost." Even, when such action implies becoming more or less an accessory after the fact. This idea of "The Crime Doctor" is an excellent one on which to base a series of stories, and Mr. Hornung uses it skillfully. Doctor Dollar has been led by a startling personal experience to interest himself, first in the possible results of surgical operations upon character, and then in the employment of other means to obviate a potential from becoming an actual criminal. His work in this new branch of the profession is aided by all sorts of sanatorium he runs for the benefit of his especial type of patients, to whom he is both physician and father confessor, many of them being quite unaware that they are being treated for "incipient criminality." Naturally a young man in this position is bound to have adventures, particularly when one of his friends and supporters is so important a personage as the Home Secretary of England, his first encounter with whom provides the book's opening episode. Doctor Dollar frequently finds it necessary to play the part of detective in addition to his other two roles, and does it very successfully. Sometimes, in fact, he is rather more detective than physician, as in the affair of "The Golden Key," and had he not been both the matter of "The Schoolmaster Abroad," would have ended disastrously and he himself failed to pay his debt. He is all these and lover to boot in certain of those cases in which the Lady Vera Molye, the book's frank and spirited heroine, is the central figure. And once or twice he actually does become an accessory after the fact, though surely no one could help sympathizing with his decision in the matter of "One Possessed" and his treatment of "The Second Murderer" ---- whose nerves he wrecks in a way the description of which is one of the most interesting things in the book. He is a agreeable and appealing hero, this "Crime Doctor" with the slight squint and the patch of silver hair above one ear, quick-witted, enthusiastic, a man for whom loaded pistols have no terrors--- does he not walk right up to one in the very beginning and collects a number of them before the end?--- and we suspect that his creator is fond of him and does not intend to let his adventures close with this single volume. Else why is the arch villain of them all, the educated and intelligent criminal contemptuous of "battle, murder and sudden death," more to be feared than a dozen of the merely ignorant and vicious, still at liberty upon the very last page? It has been said that throughout his subsequent life Sheridan was afraid of the author of "The School for Scandal"; and it is probable that Mr. Hornung is in somewhat the same position. With each new book of his comes the chorus, "It's good, but it isn't `Raffles'!" Whether this new hero will prove as popular as that debonair thief only time will tell, but in either case he can congratulate himself upon the fact that Doctor Dollar may very likely bring certain aspects of crime to the attention of people who but for him might never have thought of them. So "The Crime Doctor" has a value outside the fulfillment of its ostensible purpose of providing lively entertainment well suited either to the Summer hammock or the Winter easy chair. -- The New York Times

In the mid 1800's England was an empire. Under British colonial rule, Queen Victoria's armies occupied twenty-five percent of the nations of this planet, implementing parliamentary law and English culture across the globe. No other fictional character bolstered the perception of Anglo-supremacy and Christian virtue than Sherlock Holmes, the UK's foremost consulting detective. He is not portrayed as a superman who needs the intellectual challenge of pursuing criminals to sway his boredom, but as an all too human solider, who after being cured of his injury that caused a personality imbalance, has a deep seeded desire to help his fellow man by the eradication of crime, by using any means at his disposal. It would be unfair for me to list any highlights of his adventures since they follow a chronological order and I wouldn't want to rob you of any enjoyment by inadvertently giving away any plot points. But I will say that reading THE CRIME DOCTOR is time well spent.

More than just a great detective

THE CRIME DOCTOR wonderfully captures the time when England's gaslights dimmed in favor of the flicker of the new electric light and her place as a superpower began to slowly corrode. Out of this transitory period emerges E. W. Hornrung's Crime Doctor. After surviving a grievous head wound attained during the folly of the Boer War, a brutal campaign in which atrocities where committed by the English against Boer civilians, John Dollar lays down his rifle to pursue the noble calling of medicine. He establishes an exclusive practice, one that only caters to the criminal classes. It is his belief that most criminals are unbalanced individuals and given the proper treatments can be cure of their compulsions. Of course, there are a few setbacks... deadly setbacks. And these failures serve as the motivation for Dr. Dollar to take a more hostile approach to the business of crime. After reading this absorbing collection, I guarantee you will be wanting more.

An Excellent Guide To Utilizing Healing Energy

I've read a number of books on healing through touch and have had experience both as a client and a practitioner. Bradford's work is an excellent combination of theory, anecdote, and method. He writes with a clarity that makes his material easily understandable for the beginner and with a depth that the experienced healer will find enlightening. This is a book I would not be without. I refer to it often for new insights on both self-healing and for work with clients.

I have heard that Michael Bradford was a great healer. I have many books on how to heal. This is one book never to try his form of healing. Never Never pull out negative energy from a person, run this energy across your body down your other arm and out your hand. This can cost you many problems in your life if you do not know what you are doing. There are many other safer ways of getting rid of negative energies that will cause no harm to yourself. Eric Pearl's books are easy to learn is a very good start in the healing area. Healing Codes, and tapping are another way of instant healings and feeling better. I hope this will help you on your path to healing yourself and others.

Italy emerged from the Paris Peace Conference of 1919 with the feeling that it had been denied its just rewards by ungrateful allies and that its victory was thus mutilated. Integrating this vengefulness into his diplomacy in the 1920s, Mussolini undertook a policy of selected treaty revision aimed at the breakup of the newly created state of Yugoslavia through covert operations. These stratagems proved futile. Ignoring the threat posed by Nazi Germany's obvious determination to annex Austria, whose continued independence was key to Italy's security in Europe, Mussolini successfully invaded Ethiopia in October 1935, with only lukewarm opposition from France and Britain. Subsequently, in July 1936, he unwisely intervened on the side of the insurgent general Francisco Franco against the Republican government in Madrid. Instead of the expected speedy victory, Italy got bogged down in a prolonged civil war, which rendered Mussolini even more dependent on Nazi Germany. To preserve his standing in Berlin, he did not lift a finger when the Third Reich marched into Austria in 1938. Convinced of the growing decadence of the Western democracies, Mussolini turned to forge the Rome-Berlin Axis. But given Italy's military weakness, Mussolini was bound to be Hitler's junior partner. When the Duce talked of turning the Mediterranean Sea into an Italian lake in February 1939, he found himself trapped in Hitler's military iron cage. Parity in the Axis was the Duce's own peculiar myth. When Germany invaded Poland in September 1939, Mussolini declared nonbelligerency since he was in no position to wage war. He intended to bide his time in order to see who would win or, in the event of a stalemate, to step in as a mediator. But when the Nazi steamroller crushed France, Mussolini felt he had only one option—war on the side of Germany. By tying himself to Hitler's war chariot, Mussolini sacrificed the national interests of his country and doomed his Fascist regime to ultimate destruction.

About the Author

H. JAMES BURGWYN is Professor of History at West Chester University. During a two-year leave of absence 1977-1979, he served as an Assistant Director at the Salzburg Seminar in American Studies in Salzburg, Austria. He is the author of Il Revisionismo Fascista and The Legend of the Mutilated Victory: Italy, the Great War, and the Paris Peace Conference (Greenwood, 1993) and has contributed articles in numerous journals both in America and Italy.

A masterful analysis!

H. James Burgwyn, Italian Foreign Policy in the Interwar Period, 1918-1940. Westport, CT: Praeger, 1997, 246 pages.
Published as part of the Praeger Studies of Foreign Policy of the Great Powers and based on both original sources and secondary works, this is a masterful analysis of Italian foreign policy in the inter-war period. Burgwyin adopts a "realist" interpretive and normative approach. Foreign policy is (and should be) the pursuit of a country's interests, conceived primarily in security terms, within the constraints of the existing balance of power. From this point of view, one could say that Burgwyn retraces Italy's slow descent into a diplomatic abyss, or how Mussolini's progressive abandonment of Realpolitk, due primarily to ideological prejudices, reduced his margin of maneuver, and ultimately led him towards an inevitable embrace with Hitler. Although Mussolini tried to overturn the order that had emerged from the Paris Peace Treaty, at first, by and large, he played according to "realist" rules. The only "sin" was perhaps that he had too inflated a concept of Italy's role which he saw as that of "balancer" or, at least, "decisive weight." He did not achieve his early goals (the disintegration of Yugoslavia and undermining French influence in Southeastern Europe) goals which were quite ambitious given Italy's limited capabilities. He did, however, succeed in building what he regarded as an empire in Africa judging, correctly, that the Western powers would not go to war to stop him, and that Hitler had domestic preoccupations. He then tried to walk equidistantly between the Allies and Germany in order to extract some concessions from both. It was Mussolini himself, however, Burgwyn argues, that undermined his chosen role of "balancer." By making the doubtful ideological (as opposed to "realist") choice of aiding in the destruction of the Austrian Social Democratic Party, he removed the best Austrian barrier against union with Germany. This error, was compounded by Mussolini's decision to intervene on the side of the Nationalists in the Spanish Civil War. Although conceived primarily in "realist" terms (to break up a French-Spanish popular front that might have challenged Italy in the Mediterranean), the intervention set him apart from the Western Powers. Thus, once the Anschluss was consummated, he had "to deliver the keys of Italian security in Europe to the Third Reich" (p. 223). The books is divided in 11 chapters. Chapter 1 examines the policies of Liberal Italy at the Paris Peace Conference. Burgwyn retraces with dexterity the origins of the concept of "mutilated victory" and concludes that "Italy's fiasco was the result of Sonnino's inflexibility, Orlando's opportunism, and the inability of the two to work out a common program" (p. 13). Chapters 2 and 3 retrace Mussolini's initiation to diplomacy and the progressive intrusion of a new style (tono fascista) into Italian foreign policy. Burgwyn observes that the transition was gradual but important. There was no sudden break with the diplomacy of the Liberal regime, but there was a a substantial shift in methods, as these chapters document, in terms of the pursuit of Italian revisionist goals and Mussolini's intrigues in the Balkans. More precisely, Mussolini tried to recruit new allies "from among the injured, insulted, and vanquished" nations at Versailles (p. 53), and did not hesitate to give support to terrorist groups. Chapter 4 deals with the brief "Grandi era" (May 1929-Juy 1932) and the attempt to pursue Realpolitik "free of Fascist hyperbole" (p. 57). Chapters 5 and 6 deal with Mussolini's continued attempts to break up Yugoslavia, his effort to set up a Four Power Pact that he saw as an answer to the League of Nations, and his role in the crushing of Austrian Social Democracy. Chapters 7 and 8 are devoted to the diplomatic work behind the building of an Italian empire. Chapter 9 deals with the decisive turn brought about by the arrival of Galeazzo Ciano to the post of foreign minister. He reintroduced the tono fascista which this time went unchecked by the diplomatic old guard which Ciano emasculated through the creation of a new Gabinetto staffed with his "sycophants and favorites" (p. 146). According to Burgwyn, "Ciano's pro-German following accelerated the speed with which ideology in Fascist Italy was outpacing Realpolitik" (p. 154). Chapters 10 and 11 deal with the consolidation of the Axis and the advent of war. Burgwyn has produced an excellent, interpretive essay of the foreign policy of fascist Italy. It is a welcome addition to the literature on Italian foreign policy. Approvingly or disapprovingly, future historians will have to take into account. The study is one of the best examples of a work describing both Realpolitik in action and the role, or intrusion, of ideology and personal traits in foreign policy. As such it will be useful in any advanced course in Theories of International Relations. Finally, the book can also be read as a personal tragedy: more precisely, it is an account of how "personal pride and the spirit of revenge constantly vied with," and ultimately undermined, "the Duce's gnarled Realpolitik" (p. 210), thus contributing to his eventual downfall.

just a prelude

Burgwyn undertakes a detailed scrutiny of how Italian conducted its foreign affairs between the World Wars. Many histories of this time focus naturally on Germany. But Italian actions were also significant in southern Europe and north Africa.

Most of the book looks at Mussolini's decisions, after he took power. But the book also explains the tangled mess of post-Great War relations in eastern and southern Europe. With resentments delving back centuries. Exacerbated by newer resentments over decisions made and borders changed after the Great War. Thus the book shows Mussolini supporting Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria, in a so-called Quadruplice Alliance of authoritarian governments. Today, the Quadruplice is barely remembered. Except perhaps as a baby Axis pact in the making.

Above all, Burgwyn shows Italian, or perhaps more accurately, Mussolini's fixation on encircling and conquering Yugoslavia and Albania. Described accurately in the text as Italian revisionism.

The book ends with the onset of World War 2. Where most modern histories begin. The bloodshed described at arm's length by Burgwyn was only a prelude to a much bloodier struggle.
