Must-have reference for every health economist

This updated edition has quickly replaced the original 1996 "Gold Book" as my main cost-effectiveness analysis methods reference. It explains twice the content and fills in holes where best research practices have changed over the last 20 years. While drafting papers for publication, I keep flipping back to the incredibly helpful appendix to compare how the experts prepared the tables and figures in the worked example analyses. All health economists should have a copy of this on the shelf. As the book says, "standardized components...enhance consistency and comparability across our studies."

This book was written as a theological introduction to the Bible and a vindication of Reformation principles. After appearing in several editions beginning in 1536, Calvin's 'Institutes' was finally published in this authoritative 1559 edition.

About the Author
John Calvin (1509-1564) the French theologian and reformer was persecuted as a protestant. As a result, he traveled from place to place. In 1534 at Angouleme he began the work of systematizing protestant thought in the "Institutes of the Christian Religion, " one of the most influential theological works of all time.

The benchmark of Reformed theology

This is Calvin's benchmark text of Reformed theology. Calvin is one of the magisterial giants on which the Reformation of the Christian church stands, and this work makes the reasons for his stature abundantly clear. Trained as a lawyer before becoming a pastor and theologian Calvin is logical, thorough and relentless in pressing his viewpoints on every aspect of faith addressed in this volume. And it should be added that Calvin is relentlessly biblical. There is no point in his theology that is not thoroughly grounded in scripture. He writes as one who is also well-acquainted with the church fathers as well as the theologians of his day, drawing deeply from that well of knowledge in both building up his position and refuting the positions that he believes are held in error. I read the Battles translation and the style of Calvin's writing comes across as very readable and accessible not just to pastors, theologians and educated lay persons, but to anyone who wants to understand Christian doctrine that is firmly Biblical, which, in a nutshell, is what Reformed theology is all about. I highly commend this enduring work. It is truly a timeless gift to the church.

Simply Put: A Masterpiece

Calvin is a name you often hear as one of the greatest theologians of the Reformation and the Institutes make clear why.

Since there are already a number of reviews talking about the general significance of Calvin's Institutes and the general contents, I thought I'd make a few points in case you're hesitant to buy this phenomenal book:

1. This is a magnificent work of systematic theology and Calvin's famed exegetical skills are on full display. This book will give you both a big picture view with all the shining details that are brought out in Scripture. The work also builds on itself and lays the foundation in the beginning, so as you get past the first half of Book 1, you'll find yourself being able to follow his logic in the later parts of this work.
2. Yes, the language can be a bit wooden -- but it gets easier as you read and you'll come to appreciate the richness of the language.
3. The translator's footnotes are helpful and worth reading, especially the footnotes on differences between the Latin and French versions. Calvin was aware that those reading his French version may not have had as much of rigorous theological training as a Latin reader, and so he'll add or reformulate statements and comparisons to be more understandable to a lay person.

Being able to read this work is being able to sit at the feet and learn from one of the most spiritually gifted teachers in Christianity. It has already been an immense help in my faith by correcting incorrect thinking and will be a book I read and re-read for decades to come.

Brilliant, not what I expected

I had a very negative view of Calvin before actually reading him. I saw him as cold, forbidding, nasty, etc. Now that I have read him, I know that he was brilliant, devout, easier to read than I imagined, and has more to say in one page than most writers have to say in entire volumes. As a commentator on the scriptures, he is unsurpassed in his integrity. He doesn't ignore any problem, has no agenda except to get at the truth of a passage, and gives attention to all serious objections. Reading him, you quickly sense that here is a theologian who will not lead you where he wants you to go, but will lead you to where the scriptures say to go. The sum of his theology is a magnificent view of life and existence that is majestic and is a perfect summary of the Bible.
Calvin isn't cold; he's actually passionately devout.
He isn't forbidding; he's far easier to read than you might think. Anyone with average intelligence can make their way through this book (and it will be worth it to do so).
He isn't nasty; he was a very holy man and his love for God and the church comes through on every page of this book.
I love Luther and used to think that he was the greatest theologian. I enjoy his explosive personality, wit, and sarcasm. Reading him is like reading a brilliant friend who can always be counted on to say something memorable, insightful, and profound. But I now think that Calvin was greater than Luther. While Calvin lacked Luther's very vigorous personality, Calvin's cool head and even temperament produced an intellectual tour de force with this book. Nothing written in the last three hundred years can come close to this book. Really, if you only read this one book of theology, you would need no other. It says it all.

This book does a great job of putting architecture into a view that .NET developers and architects can relate to.

The book covers design principles and patterns, and then relates them to each layer of a traditional layered system. It includes business, services, data access, and presentation layers. The authors include several different patterns for each layer and discuss the pros and cons of each.

The book focuses on the technical aspects of .NET architecture. It does not cover the soft skills need to be an architect, or cover the customer facing skills need to communicate with the business stakeholders. You won't find much on process either, just an overview. These missing topics have not taken away from the book, they have made it a stronger book. There are plenty of resources on how to execute the soft skills and architecture process. This book concentrates on how to communicate with the development team through solid design and well known patterns and principles.

This is a must read for all architects, no matter what your skill set is.

recommend it for intermediate to senior developers

I've been following Dino Esposito's work for some time, and as usual he delivers great content in a clear and concise (and often humorous) manner. I am only half way through it, and even if i was to stop here, it's already a worthy buy. This is not an in depth exploration of any subject, but a snapshot into many concepts in software architecture with ideas to go off and explorer on your own. There is a brief background of software evolution into the object oriented world, where most of the content of this book resides. It offers a well structured overview of a few key design patterns. Here are some concepts in this book that i found interesting, helpful in my design practices, and explained well:
Modularity
Information Hiding
Separation of Concerns
Cohesion
Business Objects vs Domain Objects
Liskov's Substitution Principle
Dependency Inversion Principle
Dependency Injection and Inversion of Controls
Antipatterns
Mocks
maybe a dozen or so design patterns chosen to work best with business apps

Great book

I'm in agreeance with most of the other reviews. I wanted to give this a 5 but I agree with the other 4 star that what prevents me from giving a 5th star is the lack of relevant examples. This will largely be a preference of the person purchasing the book.

The books states early to look at a group effort of some Northwind example but for me I like to have working samples as I go through a book. As I've said in other reviews, that's the point of me spending money on a book. We are limited on time and are looking for a go to where every thing is in one place and is easy to follow along.

The book, even without great sample code is well written and easy to identify with. I've been looking for a book like this for 2 years. Great work and would recommend it to any software developer looking to make themselves better.

Robert Tran received M.S degrees in Computer Information System from the University of Phoenix, San Jose, California. He has been studying Chinese Medicine since 2007. Spoon fed chemistry made understandable

I am taking general chemistry 1 in summer school and this book has basically saved me. Like the title suggests, this book concentrates on making you "fluent" with the basic techniques and ideas in Chem 101, increasing both your technical abilities and your overall understanding, and also saving you quite a bit of memorization, by showing you how to figure out what your chem book would have you memorize. It manages to spoon feed you the material with plenty of easy to remember visual concepts, but somehow avoids seeming pedantic or condescending, and also manages to be fairly concise. It is not comprehensive, but after working through the relevant section of the book, you usually have no problem learning from your assigned textbook, since the new material is usually just extensions of what you have already learned, and seems obvious. In my opinion, if they made this text a little more comprehensive and added $150 bucks to the asking price, it would be the ideal chem 101 textbook. Unless you are very confident in your chem abilities, I think it is a mandatory supplement to chem 101.

You need this book!

This book helped me get an A in Chem I. Period. Sure, my text was better than most and my professor was MUCH better than most...but every text will have shortcomings. And most professors aren't that helpful. Let's face it - most don't even care. So, THANK YOU David Klein for lending your expertise to those future professionals who would suffer through Chem I unnecessarily without your help. Do yourself a favor & invest the $20 or so that this book will cost you. Warning: Though you will probably still have to put in about 5-8 hours a week studying for this class, this book will make it worth your while...instead of just sitting there, blankly staring at diagrams, your time will be well (and properly) spent.

Wish I had found this while taking Gen Chem

I bought this to help me review some basic concepts while preparing for the MCAT. I'd read (and loved) Klein's Organic Chemistry I and II books already.

I mainly needed to review enthalpy and molecular geometry; these chapters helped much more than the shorthand reviews from MCAT prep companies--especially working the geometry problems.

Since I did not spend much time on the first half of the book, I am not that familiar with the sig figs errors other reviewers are mentioning. I know how frustrating that can be, and it's made me want to throw books away before. But I truly think that in this case, ditching the book is like throwing out the baby with the bathwater. The clarity and helpfulness of his explanations are the important part. There were a few similar issues in the Orgo II book but those few problems paled besides the utility of the vast majority of the book.

Maybe some others can comment on whether/how many errors they found in other chapters?

** I also want to make a special plea that you read in particular the chapters at the end on logarithms and balancing equations. Especially balancing equations. He has an algebraic method that is simple but sooooo brilliant. I just finished that chapter (no mistakes in those problems or chapters 7-9 that I saw) and had to get online to recommend it to all of you. Seriously. He just rocked my stoichiometric world.

There are better texts for cheaper

I've been boning up on algorithms lately and was interesting in Java based texts since I'm mainly a Java developer. Safari Books Online has this text, but after reading about 150 pages, I had to stop.

There are many typos, especially in the code examples. Don't get your brain bent out of whack trying to understand why your implementation does not match theirs as their example is likely wrong in many cases.

More importantly, be careful of the advice given in the book as it will burn you in the real world. For example, I was shocked in the Stack and Queue sections when they advised NOT to null out the internal references to an entry when removing a value from the data structure. The authors assert that you can just save time by assuming the entry will be overwritten in the future put() operations. If someone at an interview asked "how do you create a memory leak in Java?" this would literally be a textbook example.

I switched to Algorithms by Sedgewick (cheaper!), also available on Safari Books and also with complete Java examples that actually run. I'd suggest the same to anyone as the example in that text are much better and it jumps straight to the point unlike this slow moving text where you'll (1) generalize the problem (2) make some pseudo code (3) refine some more pesudo code (4) jump to a Java example . If you're going to work in Java, learn in Java.

Okay, not the best

This book is okay for a general/introduction to data structures. Most of the examples are pretty well written and the topics are explained well. I found its coverage of speed, big(O) notation and other topics lacking. The book does not go into the dept of coverage you can find in other texts, and often assumes previous knowledge of data structures and algorithms. I think this book is best suited as a reference or supplementary text (think study guide). It does not work well as a primary or sole resource for a data structures course. As such, the price is a bit high. I gave it 3 stars because I received it quickly, and in great condition. (I bought it used, but it looked almost brand new). Would definitely recommend bookbytl and Amazon. Get it used, or use a different text if you are looking for a primary resource.

Excellent for students, teachers and Pullman fans

This is a hugely interesting read. I came across this book as a Pullman enthusiast primarily, but there are a range of essays within it to suit a variety of audiences. The chapters in the first section are especially good for anyone interested in young adult literature, such as teachers or librarians. I'm an English teacher and the book has been passed around my colleagues with great interest. Anyone who managed to see the amazing stage versions of the play at the National Theatre in London will enjoy the last section of the book. I'd recommend this book for anyone who has read and loved 'His Dark Materials', anyone who is interested in children's literature and anyone with an interest in literature and theatre. Of course, for die-hard fans this book is one that must be added to the collection.
