Raphael <br>In the first book, Grey Seer, Thanquol is forced to retrieve a large amount of Wormstone from another Skaven city by the Council of Thirteen. Of course, the plans went astray for a variety of reasons, and Thanquol was blamed for everything that went wrong.<br /><br />Needless to say, in Temple of the Serpent, Grey Seer Thanquol is called before the Council to explain to the Lords of Decay how the Wormstone was lost in Under-Altdorf. This includes a brief recap of the first book - from Thanquol's twisted POV - so it's not necessary to have read the first book, but I highly recommend it!<br /><br />"Under the madness of these persistent fractals, the equations of the Old Ones were unbalanced, broken by perverse arithmetic."<br /><br />Temple of the Serpent actually begins with a prologue from the POV of an ancient creature called the slann, named Lord Talco, who studies the Great Math of the Old Ones, and views xa'cota (the rat fractals) as "corrupted algorithms." It was a bit difficult to follow, but it illustrated perfectly how different the lizard race is from the Skaven or humans.<br /><br />Thanquol is forced to meet with Nightlord Sneek, leader of Clan Eshin, after his disturbing meeting with the Council. Sneek is planning to send Shiwan Stalkscent, an assassin, with Shen Tsinge, a sorcerer, to a long lost empire of Clan Pestilens. The plague clan was chased off by Sotek the Snake Daemon, who is worshipped by the lizard race. Sneek wants Thanquol to go with them to make sure the high priest of the lizards is killed. The lizard race has built the Temple of the Serpent, where the slann resides. As Sneek explains to Thanquol:<br /><br />"Pestilens has tried many times to kill the snake prophet. If Eshin succeeds where the plague lords have failed, it will make them afraid."<br /><br />In the midst of this plot, another member of the Clan Eshin named Chang Fang plots to avenge the death of his fellow assassin, Chang Squik - one of the reasons Thanquol failed to return with the Wormstone from Under-Altdorf. Basically, Thanquol is going to have deal with another mountain of problems just to stay alive. Since they have to cross a large ocean, they hijack a human ship called the Black Mary - I absolutely loved the way the Skaven pulled off that little trick.<br /><br />Of course, there is always a human factor to any Warhammer story. In this case, the crew of the Cobra of Khemi find themselves steered by an unnatural storm to Lustria (also known as Green Hell), with the lizards and Skaven. The hired mercenary of the ship, Adawolf, sort of reminded me of Felix, but without the whining. While I found the crew to be interesting, I thought that Werner spent too many pages telling the humans' side of the story, instead of spending more time focusing on Thanquol's POV. After all, I bought the book because I am a Skaven fan, and I love how Thanquol constantly twists the actual events.<br /><br />When all three groups converge on the City of Quetza, the battle scenes were superb. I was really impressed with Werner's detailed descriptions of the surroundings and other inhabitants of the jungle. He wasn't too wordy, but he made me feel like I was actually there, suffering with the rest of them. Although, I have to admit, I think I've lost count of how many Bonerippers Thanquol has gone through.<br /><br />You don't have to be a Warhammer fan to appreciate the excellent fantasy adventure that CL Werner has written. I can't wait for the third book, Thanquol's Doom - I've already marked the release on my calendar. I just hope we see more of Thanquol next time...and it had better not be the last one!!</p> <p>6 of 8 people found the following review helpful.<br> Not as good as Grey Seer <br> By R. Landaker <br>Sad to say but the second skaven novel by CL Werner was no where near as good as the first one, Grey Seer. This doesn't mean that the book was terrible. It was still written in CL Werner's discriptive and imaginative writing style. Werner did an even better job of showing how they skaven are their own worst enemies and even though they are so cunning and evil, at times they do the stupidest things. Unfortunately, where Temple of the Serpent fails the supporting cast of antagonists just weren't as compelling this time around as in Grey Seer. Maybe it's becuase the lizardmen are so far removed from normal Warhammer stories. Maybe it was because the other characters that were in Lustria the same time as Thanquol just seemed to be morons and really boring to read about. Most likely it was probably both of these things. Read Temple of the Serpent if you are a CL Werner fan or you want to maintain continuity because you have read Grey Seer, but don't expect to be overwhelmed by it.</p> <p>3 of 4 people found the following review helpful.<br> A Wickdly Fun Fantasy Read <br> By David Stutzbach <br>In this novel featuring the fantastic Thanquol, we are taken to the jungles of Lustria and encounter the lizardmen. C.L. Werner does a wonderful job of bringing to life the spirit that infuses two races from the Warhammer universe that don't see nearly enough play. With the lizardmen we are treated to a completely alien way of thinking that skews away from just giving them a savages mentality. I could feel a bit of the Lovecraftian cult undertones coming through the lizardmen. Not as strong as their Aztec inspired heritage but it was there and gave yet another layer. How easy it would have been to fall into this trap when writing for a species that by most accounts is devoid of emotion. The ideas put forth here give a voice to oft overlooked group, and I for one wouldn't mind seeing another excursion into Lustria or perhaps even for the "Great Math" to coincide with a trip to the rest of the Warhammer world.<br /><br />Something else we are given in the beginning is a vivid brush stroke of the jungle itself. Colorful, exotic, and above all dangerous. The author really made sure that we felt the claustrophobia from being just completely engulfed by the trees, vines, the torture of the heat and humidity, the wild animals, and the viscous plants. From start we are encouraged to believe that any venture taken into the jungles is dangerous and that one must have their wits about them at all times. Sadly in the latter half of the novel this seems to be forgotten and put to the way side. It's as though one of the characters of the book completely changed their attitude and manner with little rhyme or reason. That danger and sense of foreboding that is layered in the beginning completely evaporates by the end. I felt let down by this but not enough to not have thoroughly enjoyed the book.<br /><br />The human characters in this book are not the main attraction and at times became a force for detachment. Their story a little more then a pasted together tale of the dangers of greed and the power of love (though it didn't feel like love, so lets call it kinship). The sailors and their emissary seemed pigeonholed in the story to solve a problem that Thanquol encounters at the midway point. Their was very little life to them, perhaps just being out shadowed by all the other happenings, their appearances throughout the novel, always seemed to pull me out of the story and act like a speed bump. It felt as if I had read about these people on various occasions and certainty the romantic arc was seen from the moment the characters names and jobs are revealed. Don't get me wrong they had their moments of wit and intrigue but two of the characters who could have added extra dynamics to the story are either killed of prematurely (the elf) or are simply left as deus ex machina (the priest). A more gripping and perhaps less predictable story path would have been to follow the priest more closely as he comes to grips with these worshipers of other gods, and the test of faith his environment could have brought him.<br /><br />The teeming hordes are written in this book with such glee and a pitch perfect voice behind what makes the Skaven tick it's hard not lap it up. The constant backstabbing, the wanton switching of alliances any time fear gripped the group, the over the top groveling. Throughout the novel I found myself chuckling aloud, Werner has given a voice to Thanquol and it's so much fun to listen to the gears of his mind whizzing about. The cowardice with which he carries himself is only out-shined by those brief moments where he realizes that the only way to escape with his tail intact is to draw upon his great power. We see his relationship with the Horned Rat (a Skaven deity) more clearly and the reverence he well and truly holds for his god. I defiantly think the various religions could have played a heavier role and thought at any moment we were going to see a more intellectual war follow along with your standard Warhammer violence. Finally we are given a Boneripper worthy of this Grey Seer master, and the cunning way in which he acquires his loving bodyguard, is inventive and falls perfectly within the ethos of Thanquol and the Skaven at large. Werner wisely never lets the reader feel that Thanquol is suddenly going to befriend anybody, nor trust them as his paranoia takes it's roller coaster ride through out the book. He is such a great character to read about and follow along with in his various sinister plots and schemes all to advance the Skaven race, the Horned Rat, but more to the point his own standing within Skavendom. I know there is another Thanquol and Boneripper novel headed our way (entitled Thanquols Doom) I'm just praying to the Horned Rat it's not the last. There is a rich character here who gets better with every appearance, it would be a shame to let him disappear into the Warhammer annals with out a few more mis-adventures. The other Skaven in the book help to drive the story along and showcase the race in a perfect light. What's great about the more recent novels is that they are more focused on the Skaven. It's nice that we don't need to indulge every clan (like we see in Skavenslayer). In this way we are given more precise characters with a stronger narrative between them and the Grey Seer.<br /><br />When diving into these novels, one has to know what they are reading, and take it at face value. These books aren't world changing treatises on life's larger problems but there are damn fine fantasy reads, that help give life to universe that has a long history behind it. Eggen and Donald P. Kauchak is an important resource for those teachers of all levels who wish to expand their repertoire of active teaching strategies, and for those education professors who wish to introduce future teachers to engaging and exemplary teaching strategies that have a strong theoretical and research base.<br />Moving from a discussion of information processing models of teaching, teacher effectiveness research, and active teaching, Eggen and Kauchak guide their readers through various strategies of teaching: inductive, concept-attainment, inquiry-based, and cooperative learning strategies. Sadaphal <br>Strategies and Models for Teachers essentially is a detailed guidebook and on the basics of teaching, learning, thinking, and offers many different models of teaching that each have specific advantages in specific educational situations. After the basics are covered in the first part of the book, each chapter therein is dedicated to a specific teaching model and gives exquisite detail on how to implement them, their advantages and disadvantages, and how they relate to the development of critical thinking, cognitive development, and active learning. There are plenty of practical examples to help illustrate the authors’ points, and the study questions at the end of each chapter will help you to formalize your knowledge base and solidify your understanding. This book certainly is teacher-centered and lays out all the educational options, allowing the teacher to choose dependent on what suits him or her best.<br /><br />I think those who are actively teaching and would like to read about fresh new delivery methods would benefit the most from this text.<br /><br />Generally I felt this book was written in plain language and very easy to read, but I thought that the repeated use of vignettes was excessive and diverted attention away from the main point that was reached much later.<br /><br />I used this book as part of a graduate-level course on teaching and agree with other reviewers that it is useful, but I fail to understand why it costs more than $100 (or even $25). I would highly recommend borrowing or renting this book if these options are available to you. However, to appreciate the novel, you have to know beforehand several things. But, don't worry, that is not much.<br />The story is narrated by an English gentleman Currthuers, who received an unexpected invitation of duck shooting from an old friend Davies. Being tired of his neglected position in "society," he accepts it to go to the North Sea only to find that he is involved in a mystery, or "the riddle of the Sands." His friend claims there's something in the air, something hiding behind the misty coast of Germany. But how can they prove it?<br />As a story, "The Riddle of the Sands" is far from perfect. It is full of authentic descriptions of local landscapes (the author actually cruised his yacht there), but at the same time frequent reference to the geographical data and nautical terms are a bit wearisome to readers, and moreover, the narrator often refers us to the maps in the appendix. Those things only slow down the action of the novel, and actually the book sometimes has to go through lull.<br />But, wait a while. The story gets gradually faster, and as the adventure of the heroes slowly gets near to the core of the plot, the tale becomes more and more gripping. Though characters sometimes are just more than cardboard (and especially female part is poorly done), your patience will be rewarded.<br />It is well-known that Sherlock Holmes in "His Last Bow" turns a spy for his country, and says "There's an east wind coming." The meaning of what Holmes says is clear to the comtemporary people, and Childers, a politician, also wrote his book not as an amusement but as a warning to England about the coming threat of Germany, and actually "The Riddles of the Sands" was written about 10 years before WW1 began. In this historical context too, the book is interesting, and the tediousness of the opening chapters is justified if you keep it in mind that it is meant for Childers's sarcasm against indifference and complacency among the English people (talking of English complacency, we remember later in 1938, immediately before WW2, Alfred Hitchcock again uses it as a satire in his thriller "The Lady Vanishes" with brilliantly silly two British gentlemen who are more concerned with cricket games than surrounding danger). People don't change.<br />So, the book itself is still enjoyable, but these historical matters will make it more precious; after all, it is one of the proof how people reacted to the coming change in the history of mankind. And if you're interested in this kind of book (I mean, books reflects German-England relationship), check out "The Battel of Dorking" by George Chesney (written in 1871) and "When William Came" (in 1913) by Saki once.</p> <p>40 of 40 people found the following review helpful.<br> I say, Carruthers, well done old chap <br> By Peter Reeve <br>In deciding whether to read this novel, there are some things you should know:<br /><br />Firstly, it is beautifully written. It is a classic piece of prose literature. Long descriptive passages evoke a wonderful atmosphere and sense of place. The characterization is sharp and accurate, and the dialogue is convincing.<br /><br />Secondly, this is not an action-packed spy thriller. The story unfolds slowly and is somewhat linear, without the shock twists and turns that would be expected from a contemporary spy story. Having said that, you are better reading the book without knowing exactly what the answer to the 'riddle' is. Many of the reviews here on Amazon contain the spoiler and the blurb on the back of the Penguin Red Classics edition has it too. You have been warned.<br /><br />Next, there is a lot about boats and the sea. If you are any kind of boat enthusiast, you will love this book. If you are not, or are positively averse to the ocean, then you will find the lengthy descriptions of tacking and sounding, reefing and kedging, to be rather wearisome. This is essentially the adventures of two Englishmen in a boat.<br /><br />The opening chapters are extremely funny at times, as the hero discovers that his yachting holiday isn't going to be quite the luxury excursion he envisaged. The first half of the book is a delightful comedy of manners, but the mood gradually changes as the tension builds.<br /><br />It is a book of its time - the end of the nineteenth century and the build up to the Great War. As such, it gives remarkable insights into the culture and attitudes of the period. The reference in the first sentence to 'black faces' may bring a few modern readers up short. The hero Carruthers (a name which has since become a parody) is a true-blue British hero -- honorable, brave and determined. I was forcibly reminded of Bulldog Drummond and of an adventure of his - Bulldog Drummond at Bay - published just before World War II, containing the same urgent (and uncannily accurate) warnings about German military buildup. But Carruthers is far more sympathetic and believable a character than Drummond, and Childers an immeasurably better writer than Sapper.<br /><br />A great strength of the book is its authenticity. One can believe every moment actually happened. All the characters are fallible and plans invariably go slightly awry, just as in real life. And you can almost feel the mud and the cold wind and rain of the landscape - or rather seascape - in which most of the events take place.<br /><br />A masterpiece, for lovers of great literature.<br />[PeterReeve]</p> <p>36 of 37 people found the following review helpful.<br> Solid read, but only in context <br> By Seth Merlo <br>I bought The Riddle of the Sands to use in an History essay for university where I was looking at how the spy was portrayed before World War I. As one of the more popular titles from that era of 'invasion literature,' Childer's work certainly fit the bill. It is the story of two men sailing around the Frisian Islands trying to uncover a German plot to invade the north of England. That's basically it in the way of plot. It was Childer's way of calling attention to what he believed where Britain's insufficient North Sea defenses, and the real possibility of a German naval invasion. He succeeded in that endeavour and the North Sea defenses were eventually strengthed, which you could view either as a testament to the power of this novel, or to the 'great underlying problems and increasing pessimism' felt throughout Europe (to quote Ruth Henig), in the lead up to World War I.<br /><br />Whichever view you take, the novel has a depth of characterisation that is quite remarkable for a first attempt at fiction. Davies and Carruthers are representative of the two poles of English class/social structure at the time, with the inarticulate, yet perceptive everyman Davies teaming up with well-mannered and intellectually capable Carruthers, figurative of the way that all aspects of British society would need to come together to face the coming invasion. However, the fact that this was Childers' first and only novel begins to show in his pacing. This is hardly the 'cliff-hanger' that Milt Bearden claims it to be in his brief 5-page introduction. However, Childers' purpose was not to write a thrilling page turner, but a warning against German invasion. To really enjoy this novel, you have to read it in that context, otherwise you'll be thinking 'what's the big deal?' There is relevance to our contemporary situation, given the whole 'invasion' theme, but to understand that connection, you need to be aware of the reasons for Childers' decision to write this book, and, by extension, the motivation of his characters.<br /><br />This Modern Library edition does offer some background in Bearden's introduction. Enough to give the casual reader some brief historical context, at least. It follows the Modern Library's tradition of having authors from relevant and related fields offering their thoughts, rather than the academic/scholarly approach that Penguin or Oxford take. The problem here though is that it is too brief to offer any real insights. There is also the standard Modern Library reading guide, offering questions that range between vaguely thought-provoking to superficial. I don't know why they bother with these reading guides, especially at the expense of a decent introduction. However, if you're just after the story without wading through the academia of the Oxford World's Classic release, then this is the version you're after.
