If you want some random basic knowledge in different in only very specific circumstances then this book could be valuable but it

I was expecting a little more comprehensive information on any of the subjects in the book. The book barely touches on siding at all and has more than 1 article that is devoted to painting which I wouldn't have expected or really wanted in this book. If you are looking for something to guide you through siding, roofing or trim work this is NOT the book for you. If you want some random basic knowledge in different in only very specific circumstances then this book could be valuable but its mostly just a waste of money.

Many New Ideas on Methods and Materials

I've been devouring as many of these "For Pros, By Pros" books as I can get my hands on, and can say that this one is just as good as the others. My credentials: I recently built my own house and have been restoring old houses for the past fifteen years.
Having read many books now about home building, this one still taught a ton of new things. The book begins with a detailed exploration of siding with an emphasis on the importance of creating opportunities for airflow behind your siding. Yes, that's right: homebuilding scientists are now making the point that you need a vertically open airspace behind your siding for moisture to be able to move up and out. This is the kind of thing that shows up all throughout this book: new, reasonable ideas. The authors talk a lot about roofing, and when they do, they give a thorough explanation of how there are various ways to vent a roof AND viable ways to create a highly-insulated unvented roof. The section on painting is particularly impressive as it covers both new construction and all the complexity of stripping an old house. That's a big job that I've done several times, and this book offers an excellent overview of all the steps involved in scraping, repairing, sanding, priming, caulking, and painting. Tools are also discussed, with emphasis on tools that work vs. tools that just look good and cost a lot.
The book is full of information about the final steps in the process of building a home and would be good for the DIY weekend warrior or the contractor looking to learn a bit more about the latest methods. If you're building an entire house on your own, as I did, you'll also learn a lot from all of the other "for pros, by pros" books. The best, in my opinion, are this one, the book on wiring, and the book on plumbing.

Note that some of the books in the series are written by individual authors. This book on Siding, Roofing, and Trim is from a collection of authors from "Fine Homebuilding." They really know their stuff.

Lots of great info, but really for pro's (like the title says...)

I'm not a professional, so please take this review with a grain of salt. I found an immense amount of detail in this book, and this resource would probably be most useful to someone who is involved in this activity on a daily basis. The book had a few shortcomings, primarily those centered around the illustrations, which in some cases had way too much detail in each. They would have been better broken down into smaller "chunks". I also found the discussion of siding materials to be very limited, and was surprised to not see LP Smartside or materials similar to that discussed at all.
