Last of the Robbers Roost Outlaws: Moab’s Bill Tibbetts, by Tom McCourt

In the early 1900s much of southern Utah was still untamed, unnamed, and unexplored. To a bold adventurous boy like Bill Tibbetts, the place was magic. Cowboys still bucked-out wild horses and chased renegade bands of Indians that skulked through mountain shadows or up canyons cradling ancient cliff dwellings.

The story of Bill Tibbetts, who overcame the travails of being a wanted man in a hostile land, is a nostalgic read of hard times in the old west. This book is an exciting tale of one man’s journey: his grit, his gumption, his loyalty to the land and family.

Review

“Long after Butch and Sundance left the country in 1901, outlaws rode on. The wild terrain of southeastern Utah remained their refuge, from the infamous Robbers Roost to today’s Canyonlands National Park, and beyond. In his biography of one such man, McCourt reveals how some became wanted, while others freely operated under the guise of respectability. The author does a super job of capturing the flavor of time and place, a grim enlightenment of hard times and consequences.”—Bette L. Stanton, historian and author of Where God Put the West

An excellent, true Western Novel....at last !!
By Janice Kirk Gustafson
An excellent western....and all true. This book would make an excellent movie and I hope it is discovered as such. The beauty of the landscape where the action takes place can not be described, and I yearn to go back there. A truly exciting book to read, especially when you know it is a true story.

Best Book I've Ever Read.
By Jamison Wiggins
Tom did a great job writting this book. Im glad my grandpa finally got someone to put his stories into an amazing book. I don't really like reading, but once i picked this book up, i couldn't put it down. After listening to my grandpa for many years and hunting in the area where this whole book took place, its kind of crazy to see how it all comes together so perfect. Hope this turns into a movie someday.

A peek into Moab, Utah's past
By Catherine
Last of the Robber's Roost Outlaws is a fun local history book. Based on interviews with Bill Tibbetts' family, friends, and neighbors, the author states that he has fictionalized some dialogue, but backs up his interpretations with solid history. As a frequent visitor to the Moab, Utah area, I was delighted to learn the inside scoop on its rugged past. Did I mention there are lots of photos, and copies of newspaper clippings from that period?
