Real Wolfmen: True Encounters in Modern America, by Linda S. Godfrey

What’s hiding in the woods? Here is the definitive account of today’s nationwide sightings of upright, canine creatures – which resemble traditional werewolves – and a thorough exploration of the nature and possible origins of the mysterious beast.
“She has the ability to send chills up and down your spine.”

—Brad Steiger, author of Real Ghosts, Restless Spirits, and Haunted Places

“If you thought the likes of The Wolfman, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, and Underworld had no basis in fact, it's time to think again!” —Nick Redfern, author of There's Something in the Woods

“Real Wolfmen is a riveting work of amazing scope and depth. You’ll be hooked from the first page.”--Rosemary Ellen Guiley, author of The Encyclopedia of Vampires and Werewolves

The U.S. has been invaded – if many dozens of eyewitnesses are to be believed – by upright, canine creatures that look like traditional werewolves and act as if they own our woods, fields, and highways. Sightings from coast to coast dating back to the 1930s compel us to ask exactly what these beasts are, and what they want.

Researcher, author and newspaper reporter Linda S. Godfrey has been tracking the manwolf since the early 1990. In Real Wolfmen she presents the only large-scale cataloguing and investigation of reports of modern sightings of anomalous, upright canids. First-person accounts from Godfrey’s witnesses – who have encountered these creatures everywhere from outside their car windows to face-to-face on a late night stroll – describe the same human-sized canines: They are able to walk upright and hold food in their paws, interact fearlessly with humans, and suddenly and mysteriously disappear.

Godfrey explores the most compelling cases from the modern history of such sightings, along with the latest reports, and undertakes a thorough exploration of the nature and possible origins of the creature.

“If I was to ask you what two words are most relevant to the phenomenon of werewolves and lycanthropes you might well say “Full” and “Moon.” Or, “Silver” and “Bullet.” Well, you’re definitely on the right track, but I say those two words are “Linda” and “Godfrey”! Yep, not only is Linda the most well-known chronicler of all-things wolfman-themed, but she’s certainly the most prolific one, too. This new title from Linda is one that I definitely recommend to anyone and everyone who has voraciously devoured Linda’s previous studies of the werewolf phenomenon. And if you’re a newcomer to the subject, and want to learn what it’s really all about, it’s just about the most important book you can read on the phenomenon to date. And I don’t write words like that lightly.”

"It is hard to believe that such a creature could exist. However, the witness accounts in Real Wolfmen are often very compelling. Pick up a copy and see for yourself."

Outstanding presentation!
By otto0713
Welcoming you to the world of crypto (unknown)-zoology (animal); Linda Godfrey's compilation of nefarious dog-man encounters will open your mind to the truly bizarre and unnatural. Her collection of incidents and reports; many of which she investigated herself, are both compelling and profound. Nonetheless, she presents case after case of these unbelievable and well-written accounts that really left me struggling for air. Time and time again these witnesses have come forth with their stories of seeing something unexplainable and un-nerving. Imagine, if you will, a six to seven foot tall, upright walking werewolf-like creature, complete with pointed ears, muzzle, and mangled fur that seems to appear out of nowhere and stalk its beholder with both a physical rush and psychological imprint that implies "IT" is in control of the encounter. As unreal as that may seem, it happens more times than you can imagine and is a world-wide phenomena that has caught the attention of many of us who find these mysterious creatures existing in that finely tuned Fortean zone of uncomfortableness. To that end we are drawn, subtly and without knowing why.
Further into these bizarre accounts, the author begins her assault on our common rationality and enters the realm on the edge of interdimensional realities and ideas that truly plague the light-hearted. Even I was lying awake in deep thought as to the meanings of these meetings and lost many hours of sleep. I suppose the reason being my own writings and conjecturing about such things as Bigfoot, UFOs, and the paranormal in general. But then again if you take this lightly, you will miss the ride of your life.
A common misconception of most who delve into the paranormal is that they can remain objective; no matter the scope and intent of an authors work and will walk away unscathed. Nothing can be farther away from the truth. I believe Godfrey has endeavored and succeeded in presenting to a skeptical and pragmatical society, an idea that clearly exhibits a deep and almost philosophical aura of understanding and warmth towards an otherwise taboo array of cryptid, lycanthropic meddling. I especially like her quotes from sources such as the late John A Keel (Operation Trojan Horse) and Nick Redfern; also an expert in this strange business. The authors' knowledge and years of investigational reporting put her among the top of the field of were-beasts and other everyday mundane monsters that crop up along the waterways, crossroads and cemeteries of Wisconsin and her jovial brevity makes it a fun read amid the seriousness of its contents.
Her first book "The Beast of Bray Road" is what started it all, and I look forward to reading it. But this thing shines! I really thought it was well written and informative in a style that demands your attention. Anyone with even a slight interest in the subject matter won't be disappointed.
For all of the above, I give this most excellent source of data, information, and interpretation a full five stars. I highly recommend this work.

A "Best Of" of Godfrey's Were-books
By William R. Hancock
This volume is a great read. It is likely to be magnetic for "lycan" types who are full into role playing games (and, sometimes, "over the edge" psychologically into believing they are classic transforming, ravenous werewolves), and, although the term "werewolf" is used here and there throughout the book, the subject matter is really not drawn from the mold of supernatural horror, but, rather, from a curious, comtemporary mystery. There are cases after cases---researched, investigated, and narrated here by Linda Godfrey---whereby just plain WEIRD looking wolf-like or dog-like "things"---whatchamacallits----are seen by regular old average Americans in very curious circumstances, and these sightings leave these witnesses quite shaken and amazed. What does NOT go on is people being attacked, ravaged, or shredded to ribbons. No chilling howling at the moon, either. No one in the neighborhoods are rumoured to be "weres" and no lantern or torch-carrying posses crying "Kill the Monster!" roam the backwoods by night. What DOES happen is that normal folks are just going about their business---under full moons, half moons, waxing moons, waning moons, and sometimes under no moon at all---try BROAD DAYLIGHT or early twilight---and they see----"something weird". That something is, typically, a large thing crossing a road or entering a field (often a cornfield); something that LOOKS like a big dark wolf or dog. It may be on four legs or TWO, and can seemingly go to either position with ease.It can run very fast ad often turns to look at the amazed witness and gives them a look of contempt---almost a sneer. It may make moves---even runs---AT the witness, but then the whatsit typically TURNS AWAY. This is very like the "bluff runs" made by bears to scare intruders away. Very DISSIMILAR to folkloric "werewolf" behavior.

But it sure is SCARY!!!

In any event, these accounts are what "Real Wolfmen" is chock full of. Should these things be called wolf (or dog) "MEN"? They ARE, but I'm not so sure this term is justified. There is very little, if anything, manlike about them. "Wolfen" maybe? It is this "man" connotation that has, I think, led to one rather silly claim in "explanation" of these things; to wit, that they are a "misidentification" of a type of "snouted"(?) or "muzzled" BIGFOOT!!!! So help me, this is true. That this is BEYOND absurd is evidenced by the fact that---with Bigfoot/Sasquatch being surmised as some type of HOMINID survival in the modern world, a Gigantopithecus blacki, a paranthropus, or, even a Neandertal MAN---there is NOTHING in the fossil record to REMOTELY suggest an anthropoid primate with a dogs head, dog's ears,OR A LONG, BUSHY, DOGLIKE TAIL! That presumption is preposterous. And, as Godfrey recounts numerous times, the dog/wolf head is SEEN, the MUZZLE or SNOUT is SEEN, the upright ears are SEEN, PAWS are SEEN, the TAIL is SEEN, AND-----DIGIGRADE "Dog Legs" with a reverse high ankle joint are SEEN! Bigfoot??? Get OUTTA Here! You gotta be KIDDING me!!!! Not only that, but the things at times leave PRINTS in their wake----doggy/wolfy PAW PRINTS and NOT humanlike Bigfoot prints! It is therefore, I submit, utterly ASININE to go around claiming "misidentifed bigfoots" as the "answer" to the dogman/manwolf mystery. In this Linda Godfrey and I are in full agreement.

What Linda has in this new volume is a kind of "Best Of" of her Bray Road books (Beast of Bray Road, Hunting the American Werewolf, and The Michigan Dogman). Like a CD anthology collection of the "Best of The Who" or the "Best of the Beach Boys". or some such, she has revisited the creme de la creme accounts in the previous books, added TO these in some instances, recorded a few updates, and added also some completely NEW material that is informative and intriguing. She has found that, using new GPS navigational technologies, there are more interesting points to ponder with these mystery creature encounters.

What ARE these things? Tulpa-like thought-form creations by magickal practioners? Demonic conjurations? Dog Soldiers from the stars?
Linda gives consideration to quite a few possibilities here---all of them MOST intriguing.

"Real Wolfmen" is an excellent new conpendium of intellectual "chew food" on a real head-scratcher of a subject.

The Definitive Werewolf Guide!
By Nick Redfern
If I was to ask you what two words are most relevant to the phenomenon of werewolves and lycanthropes you might well say "Full" and "Moon." Or, "Silver" and "Bullet." Well, you're definitely on the right track, but I say those two words are "Linda" and "Godfrey"! Yep, not only is Linda the most well-known chronicler of all-things wolfman-themed, but she's certainly the most prolific one, too.

Check out her track record to date: The Beast of Bray Road; Hunting the American Werewolf; Werewolves; and The Michigan Dogman. And, not forgetting Weird Wisconsin and Monsters of Wisconsin - both of which contain insightful data on such creepy critters. But, now for the news: Linda is back with yet another book on the subject. Its title: Real Wolfmen: True Encounters in Modern America.

Published by Tarcher/Penguin, this new title from Linda is one that I definitely recommend to anyone and everyone who has voraciously devoured Linda's previous studies of the werewolf phenomenon. And if you're a newcomer to the subject, and want to learn what it's really all about, it's just about the most important book you can read on the phenomenon to date. And I don't write words like that lightly.

Before I get to the subject matter of the book in-depth, it's important to note a very refreshing theme that runs through the pages of all Linda's books on those beasts of a full moon: she does not try and shove down your throat any particular theory. Nor does she demand you accept this idea - or deny that one - as gospel at the expense of all the rest.

Instead, Linda recognizes that while there is undeniably a real phenomenon at work, in terms of its origin (or origins) it's one still shrouded in deep mystery. And, keeping that in mind at all times, Linda offers ideas, scenarios and thoughts for what these beasts might be, but in a fashion that doesn't lecture to you or scream at you. If only more Fortean writers could take that unbiased approach.

So, with that said, onto the book. Running in at more than 300-pages, Real Wolfmen is - for me, anyway - the most important and significant of all Linda's titles (not to say that all the rest aren't important and significant, of course!), and here's why: it really provides the reader with a solid, encyclopedic study of the many and varied cases, theories, ideas, incidents and eye-witness accounts that have come Linda's way since she first found herself in the clutches of the beast, back in December 1991.

Plus, it provides us with a large amount of brand new cases that stretch across pretty much all of the United States. In that sense, Real Wolfmen acts as the definitive guide to Godfrey-based gore, monster mayhem and creatures freaky, furry and sometimes fiendish.

There are two issues that really stand out when it comes to werewolves and Linda addresses them skilfully: (A) the physical nature, appearance and character of the creatures; and (B) the geographic locations where they have been seen.

As for the former, it's clear that as more and more people have come forward to speak with Linda and share their stories, we're seeing an astonishing picture forming that has not previously been realized on such a scale. All across the US, and for decades - actually, maybe even for much, much longer - people have been encountering very strange beasts that have wolfish appearances, but that seem to have the uncanny ability to walk as easily on their hind-legs as they do on all-four.

Indeed, the deep similarities reported by witnesses all across the nation, and spanning the years, is near-mind-blowing. Reading Linda's worlds, it's almost as if we're talking about a breed of wolf that, quite literally, walks like man and beast, and which has lived amongst us in stealth for, well, who knows how long? But is that all there is to it? Granted, the discovery of a bipedal wolf in our midst would be extraordinary enough on its own; but, it's clearly not the whole story. Far from it.

Linda does not shy away from addressing the many aspects of the phenomenon that push things down a paranormal pathway - and there are plenty of them. Regardless of how you, me, Linda, or whoever, interprets that undeniably emotive word - "paranormal" - the fact of the matter is that there exists a significant body of data suggesting these beasts straddle our realm of existence as easily as they do...somewhere else.

What that "somewhere else" might be, is the big question. And it's now that we turn our attentions to that other aspect of the riddle that Linda negotiates with skill: the aforementioned geographic locations involved.

Our fearless werewolf hunter demonstrates that many sightings of werewolves occur at locations that have long been associated with supernatural phenomena: crossroads, cemeteries, sacred ground, sites of archaeological significance and more. Paradoxically, when encountered at these particular places, the creatures seem as real as they do unreal, and as tangible as they do intangible.

And it's with respect to these confusing matters that Linda presents us with a variety of theories to try and explain the presence of these mystifying "things."

The down to earth theories pertaining to mental-illness and clinical lycanthropy can clearly explain a small number of reports, and chiefly those from centuries-past, many of which have now attained undeniable folkloric status. But, today's reports are harder to define.

That does not prevent Linda from seeking out the answers, however. And, in doing so, we find ourselves immersed in the worlds of the occult, ancient spirit-guardians, dimension-hopping monsters, skin-walkers, wendigos, Trickster-like phenomena, and a multiplicity of other matters of a fantastic nature.

Then, there are the really creepy aspects to some of the stories: (A) the undeniable air of negativity, hostility and malevolence that seems to ooze forth from these beasts, and the way in which the witness can become near-overwhelmed by such terrors; (B) the sense that these animals are highly intelligent, deeply cunning, and malevolently manipulative; and (C) the totally weird - but very thought-provoking - theory that some of these entities perceived as werewolves may actually be feline animals with canine qualities.

Say hello to the "Doberman-Lynxes" - bone-chilling monsters that sound like they just strode out of the pages of some Lovecraftian nightmare. I sincerely hope Linda will actively pursue this latter phenomenon as her research and writing continues, since it offers a fascinating and seldom-discussed aspect of the puzzle.

So, all in all, what we have with Real Wolfmen is a superb study of countless witness reports, numerous and thought-provoking theories for what's afoot, a dazzling body of data and - short of us coming across a body and 100 percent proving the point - a collection of material clearly demonstrating, to me, that there really is something in the woods. And, sometimes, far closer to home and civilization, too.

A great job! And with her fifth werewolf-themed book now under her belt, here's looking forward to Linda's next five!
