I don't think so.
By rlm
I wanted to like this one. I really did. Aside from modern speech patterns, which I was mostly able to ignore, the actions of the male protagonist were incredibly cruel, selfish, and self-interested, not to mention, well, stupid. He married and then humiliated her as revenge for something her father had done? He 'gave' her inadequate transportation--a cart--to carry herself and eleven children (an eight day trip) because he thought she would have to stop nearby? And then, though he knows where she's headed, he "can't find her" on the road? Seriously? And he thinks she'll have him back because he's been damaged and he loves her so. Yeah, right.

Kick him to the curb.

Far too much suffering for the heroine!
By Whoever
I really liked the first book, Stone Devil Duke, and was impressed by the author’s skill--some minor errors, but overall great storytelling and a likable, feisty heroine. But I HATE, HATE, HATE this book! It’s a tale of emotional sadism and mental torture by the non-hero against the heroine.

Here’s the story in a nutshell. Him: “Oh, I just can’t let myself love her because I’ve planned my revenge for so long. Now what else can I do to hurt and humiliate her?” Her: “He’s been so mean to me and I don’t want to love him, but I just can’t help it!” What a load.

I can’t stress enough how evil he is to her, how many ways he finds to degrade and mistreat her--then he grovels just a tiny bit, swears his love, and she’s right back in his arms. She needs professional counseling.

Another hot-button issue for me: infidelity. It’s not absolutely clear that he was unfaithful, although he probably was, but the way he uses his mistress to humiliate her is beyond any emotional abuse I’ve ever read in a so-called romance. But what really makes me furious is that even when he starts to explain and apologize to get her back, he never clears up that little issue or says he’s sorry for it. That’s an omission I just can’t get over, not after how sickening those scenes were.

Here’s how much I hate this book: I’m putting K. J. Jackson on my “do not buy” list, in spite of how much I liked the first book. I read romance for fun and escape--I quit buying Medievals because it seems mandatory that the heroine be raped, whipped, and imprisoned. Unmasking the Marquess is too close to that mark for me; it’s the complete antithesis of a feel-good story.

Let the reader beware.

Disgusting H
By Sandy Milan
I passed on the book before this one 'Stone Devil Duke' because of the negative reviews but this one sounded good. I'd hoped that the author would have taken some of the criticism of the previous book to heart and would work hard to make this one different. There were editing errors and mistakes with words but I didn't notice that much modern language. There were several scenes that were too modern and implausible. However the big problem with this one was the story.

+++Spoilers+++
The H is determined to marry the h because he wants to take revenge on her father. This is premise that often works well and at least they'd be married so no modern historical here. The H's close friend's wife gets to hear of his scheme and begs him not to marry the h because she is in love with the H. Part of the H's plan included getting the h to fall for him. So our innocent h happily marries him and they have their wedding night and then it all goes to hell. The H turns on the h, virtually destroys her verbally and then sends of her off to another one of his estates like a piece of garbage and doesn't have contact with her for 6 months. She writes a letter to him for every day of those 6 months, which we know he never reads until much later. He pitches up to the estate where she is staying 6 months later with his mistress, who is a nasty piece of work, and kicks the h out after allowing the mistress to humiliate her first. He wants her to go to London but she has been setting up a small orphanage and when the H sees the kids he kicks them out too. The h then virtually has to walk to London (there is only one small cart between them). She eventually arrives in London in a terrible state and moves into a house that her aunt left for her and she begins to try to get her life and that of the orphans together. She sees a close friend of the H, who tries to help her. The thing is a shocking mess and the H re-enters her life. He begins to show remorse but the h isn't interested. This goes on for awhile but eventually our h falls back into his arms. There is no grovelling, no repentance just that they are going to have a new start. The villain comes back into the picture to add more drama then we all have our hea.

I found the H in this book utterly disgusting. I hate cheating firstly and obviously he did it right after he consummated the marriage and kicked her out. He had this plan of action right from before he married the h. His actions were so beyond redemption right from the start and I never got over it. When I read books like this, I often think of Lady Gallant, where the H does something really bad but boy does the author make him work and grovel for his redemption and it ends up being a great book. This one just left a bad taste in my mouth.
