If you like professional cycling read this book!

To preface this review I became very interested in cycling during the late 1970's. I think what I like most about this book is that it is about pro cycling before it became "Americanized". Before the notion that "second place is the first place loser" and you ain't jack unless you make the most money. Kelly talks about the various team directors that shaped his career, how some teams functioned and others struggled, the agreements that were "made on the road" among other topics. He also seems genuinely grateful for the lasting friendships he made through cycling. I don't think he says a bad thing about anyone, he makes some frank statements but nothing real negative. Toward the end of the book he talks about how the pro peloton in Europe was becoming more international, how there were riders from Mexico, Columbia, United States and Australia. He talks about how the first Tour of France he rode had just over 100 riders and how at the end of his career the Tour would have over 200 participants. I liked this period of pro cycling, I love the classics, and I thought Kelly was a great rider so it only follows that I enjoyed this book.

great book...awesome rider! Long time coming...

I say this is a must read for one simple reason...it is by Sean F-ing Kelly...one of the greatest riders ever...a true tough guy...the guy who used to do radio interviews and nod a yes or no to a question...a guy who won some of the hardest bike races in the world...ect...is it a good read as well? absolutely!

I am a cycling fan, so reading anything about the great cyclists of our time is something I enjoy, but Mr. Kelly manages to tell it like i is without being a jerk about it. That's not necessarily an easy feat.
