I have never been so overwhelmed by a myriad of emotions through a book before. Through her well-knit stories, writer Kinshuk Verma takes us on a journey filled with nostalgia, of beautiful things and moments filled with grief, joy, love and hate. Moments we seldom realize we are an audience to until they become a memory. These are wonderfully textured stories, that in their own world of simplicity, draw the reader in right from the start. Her storytelling skills craftily blend the sights and voices and worries into an extraordinary experience.

Familiarity seldom breeds contentment. The last section comprises an unforgettable and heart-wrenching collection of poems; a collection unlike many, that evokes an almost cinematic sense of color and emotion, with its rich details, both sweet and bitter.

The 231 Club, a CIA true story, encompasses intriguing personalities, an examination of the psyche behind the storyteller, exciting and unique espionage adventures at a time when wits were at play more than gadgets. It dissects how one man with a great career and fulfilling life takes a radical detour which turns his whole world upside down.

J Bartell was an instructor, lecturer and chief of staff of a large California-based therapy institute whose clients included people from all walks of life. But it was his worldwide travels on behalf of affluent clients, including heads-of-state, that put him on the radar of the CIA. What started out as simple courier work eventually led to Bartell becoming part of a small group that handled off-book assignments, meaning no record, so there’s “plausible deniability”.

The CIA covert black ops group consisted of Bartell, his CIA handler Chauncey Holt and former U.S. Marine, Michael Harries, who is best known for having created the famous Harries Flashlight Technique which is used by law enforcement around the world for handling weapons in low-light conditions. Additional support to the group came from master gunsmith Jim Boland and Jeff Cooper, who is considered to be the father of modern combat shooting and tactics.

As a result of Bartell’s increased involvement, a virtual trip down a forbidding rabbit hole, he experiences everything from weapons deals and covert training missions to helping ruthless killers, hiding behind positions of power, get their due.

A Story Worth Telling

It is rare for me to start a book and read the whole story in one sitting, but I could not put this one down. I was so amazed that a licensed psychotherapist and hypnotherapist, who was so successful at helping people, became a sanctioned assassin, that I purchased a book for myself and a 2nd one for loan. This memoir is a fascinating and probably a very honest account of the author's experiences and how they altered his entire life. I rate this book a 5+++++. It is not only a very action filled story, but it made me look at the fact that the choices that we make in our lives affect our very souls.

Gem of a Page-turner

The "231 Club" is an almost unbelievable story...how could this stuff be true? But, it is a great example of how truth really can be stranger than fiction. The author describes activities and scenes from his past as a CIA black operations contractor; and these stories will make your head shake and your stomach curl. His style is direct, first person and clear as a bell; he was instructed to "take out" these people by the US government in the crazy cold war days, and his team did just that in various countries and in various ways.

On the less serious side, the book is rich in terms of discussion regarding the personal weaponry contract killers used at that time, and any gun/weapon hobbyist might want to read this book for just that alone. Apparently, the members of the 231 Club hit squad spent a lot of time fashioning, tinkering with and range firing their arsenal (as I suppose hit squads might tend to do). The author even puts forth a plausible weapon theory about the Kennedy assassination - one that I had never heard but makes a lot of sense.
All in all, this book is an effortless read and a real gem of a page-turner. If you want a view from a real "spy with a license to kill" then stop watching Bond films and have a read...it will surprise you.

Makes you think!

The 231 Club is well written and I certainly appreciated the author’s voice and the casual style. It also made me think what I would have done if I were in his shoes. Take the safe road and stay in my day job of therapist or take the one going left to the big unknown with plenty of risks along the way?

Fortunately I was in my armchair enjoying the dilemma. All in all, the book is very interesting, both in the author’s background as well as in the various stories he tells of life in the fast lane. The author’s adventures make for very good reading especially when you know they are true tales of CIA exploits. What may have started as high level thinking about the jobs that needed to be done in South America or Latin America during this time period was soon relegated to the people who actually had to carry them out and they often did so with very little resources or help from the upper level “suits”.

This was a very interesting read and I would highly recommend it.

The scientific rationale of the workshop can be summarized as follows. The Eastern Mediterranean is the most nutrient impoverished and oligotrophic large water body known. There is a well-defined eastward trend in nutrient ratios over the entire Mediterranean that starts at the Gibraltar Straits and, through the western basin, proceeds to the Ionian and Levantine Seas. Supply of nutrients to the entire Mediterranean is limited by inputs from the North Atlantic and various river systems along the sea. The unique feature of the Mediterranean is the presence of an eastward longitudinal trend in available nitrate/phosphate ratios. This apparently induces a west-to-east variation in the structure of the pelagic food web and trophic interactions. In this context the Mediterranean, and in particular its Eastern basin, provides probably a unique platform to explore the hypotheses related to the suggested phosphate-limitation on production and to the shift between "microbial" and "classical" modes of operation of the photic food web. The major exception of the overall oligotrophic nature of the Eastern Mediterranean is the highly eutrophic system of the Northern Adriatic Sea. Here, during the last two decades the discharges of the northern rivers (especially of the Po), together with municipal sewage, have led to a very marked increase of nutrients and subsequent imponent eutrophication events.

If you like professional cycling read this book!

To preface this review I became very interested in cycling during the late 1970's. I think what I like most about this book is that it is about pro cycling before it became "Americanized". Before the notion that "second place is the first place loser" and you ain't jack unless you make the most money. Kelly talks about the various team directors that shaped his career, how some teams functioned and others struggled, the agreements that were "made on the road" among other topics. He also seems genuinely grateful for the lasting friendships he made through cycling. I don't think he says a bad thing about anyone, he makes some frank statements but nothing real negative. Toward the end of the book he talks about how the pro peloton in Europe was becoming more international, how there were riders from Mexico, Columbia, United States and Australia. He talks about how the first Tour of France he rode had just over 100 riders and how at the end of his career the Tour would have over 200 participants. I liked this period of pro cycling, I love the classics, and I thought Kelly was a great rider so it only follows that I enjoyed this book.

great book...awesome rider! Long time coming...

I say this is a must read for one simple reason...it is by Sean F-ing Kelly...one of the greatest riders ever...a true tough guy...the guy who used to do radio interviews and nod a yes or no to a question...a guy who won some of the hardest bike races in the world...ect...is it a good read as well? absolutely!

I am a cycling fan, so reading anything about the great cyclists of our time is something I enjoy, but Mr. Kelly manages to tell it like i is without being a jerk about it. That's not necessarily an easy feat.

Tina Modotti's short, intense life (1896-1942) has sparked numerous biographies, but museum curator Patricia Albers's is the first to do true justice to Modotti's photography and to persuasively trace its roots in her personal experiences. Albers does a fine job nailing down the particulars of this remarkable woman's picaresque journey: impoverished childhood in Italy; introduction to bohemianism and radicalism in California; amorous and artistic fulfillment in Mexico; a murder that launched her into the maelstrom of Communist Party activism in Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union, and Spain; return to Mexico and premature death. Albers's understanding of this contradiction provides the narrative tension that makes this biography such riveting reading (and great film material). Throughout Modotti's short life, she counted among her friends and co-workers Mexican artists Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, American writer John Dos Passos and Russian revolutionary and feminist Alexandra Kollontai, among many others. A person worth reading about!

"I look upon people now not in terms of race...but in terms of classes...," wrote Tina Modotti to a friend towards the end of this excellent biography. A complex woman with many passions, Modotti's life is described by Patricia Albers in vibrant terms, totally capturing the reader's attention and taking that reader on a journey through the Italy of Modotti's childhood to the United States and finally Mexico, her chosen home. Along the way Modotti's relationships with such artists as Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo is explored as well as with other notables of her time. Through Albers' exploration of her subject, the reader discovers the evolution of Modotti from actress to noted photographer to active politico. Because of Modotti's many facets the book would be an excellent gift choice. This is a story that makes the reader want to snuggle up in a comfortable chair on a rainy day and read until the sun comes out. It is well-written, informative, colorful and very human.

Dull writing style

I really wanted to read a good book about Tina Modotti, but Albers writing style is so dull, and so flat, I barely made it through chapters. She goes into tedious detail, and I have not gotten any feel at all for Tina. Fortunately, I took the book out of the library, and will return it tomorrow. Perhaps I will try another author, but this is really a great disappointment.
