The Riddle of the Sands (Illustrated), by Erskine Childers

A book that caused a huge sensation when it was first published in 1903, The Riddle of the Sands by Erskine Childers is a vivid account of German preparations to invade England, released at a time when tensions between the two countries were at an all time high. Named by The Guardian newspaper as one of the 100 greatest novels of all time, The Riddle of the Sands has delighted generations of sailing aficionados and thriller readers with its nautical and political verisimilitude.

“The first modern thriller.” The Times

“ …never loses pace.” The Independent on Sunday

“…ranks highly with the best.” The Independent

From Publishers Weekly:

"An insightful introduction by the author's great-grandson distinguishes this reissue of a seminal work of spy fiction first published in 1903. At the dawn of the 20th century, Carruthers, a young Foreign Office functionary, is lamenting being stuck in London with little to do when he receives a surprising communiqu from Oxford classmate Arthur Davies. Davies's request to join him on a yacht in Schleswig-Holstein includes an eccentric laundry-list of items that Davies wants his friend to bring. With nothing else on his horizon, Carruthers accepts, and ends up enmeshed in intrigue centering on Davies's concern that Germany's growing sea-power poses a threat to England. Childers (1870-1922) couples his patiently developed plot with richly imagined lead characters. Davies himself is the standout, rounded out by numerous quirks, including a craving for throwing items overboard from his small vessel. Eric Ambler fans will find this a fascinating antecedent."

From Booklist
First published in 1903, Childers novel caused a sensation in Britain. It is a vivid account of German preparations to invade England, released at a time when tensions between the countries were rising. Carruthers, a young staff member in the foreign office, is invited by Davies, a Cambridge friend, on a yachting holiday in the Frisian Islands along Germanys north coast. Carruthers is appalled. The yacht, Dulcibella, is a spartan 30-footer, and the poorly charted sea is a maze of shifting sands, conflicting currents, and volatile weather. The two men soon come to believe that the German government is planning war, and they set out to gather proof. Named by The Guardian as one of the 100 greatest novels of all time, The Riddle of the Sands has delighted generations of sailing aficionados and thriller readers with its nautical and political verisimilitude. That said, it is also a Victorian-era tale that challenges contemporary readers with its dense and detailed expository writing about sailing and the machinations of the Germans. One of the 100 best books ever? Probably not, but lovers of the sea, espionage thrillers, and European history will continue to embrace it in this welcome new edition. --Thomas Gaughan

A Good Thriller With Attitude
By T.NAKAJIMA
This book is often referred to as the first spy novel, and it is not wrong. However, to appreciate the novel, you have to know beforehand several things. But, don't worry, that is not much.
The story is narrated by an English gentleman Currthuers, who received an unexpected invitation of duck shooting from an old friend Davies. Being tired of his neglected position in "society," he accepts it to go to the North Sea only to find that he is involved in a mystery, or "the riddle of the Sands." His friend claims there's something in the air, something hiding behind the misty coast of Germany. But how can they prove it?
As a story, "The Riddle of the Sands" is far from perfect. It is full of authentic descriptions of local landscapes (the author actually cruised his yacht there), but at the same time frequent reference to the geographical data and nautical terms are a bit wearisome to readers, and moreover, the narrator often refers us to the maps in the appendix. Those things only slow down the action of the novel, and actually the book sometimes has to go through lull.
But, wait a while. The story gets gradually faster, and as the adventure of the heroes slowly gets near to the core of the plot, the tale becomes more and more gripping. Though characters sometimes are just more than cardboard (and especially female part is poorly done), your patience will be rewarded.
It is well-known that Sherlock Holmes in "His Last Bow" turns a spy for his country, and says "There's an east wind coming." The meaning of what Holmes says is clear to the comtemporary people, and Childers, a politician, also wrote his book not as an amusement but as a warning to England about the coming threat of Germany, and actually "The Riddles of the Sands" was written about 10 years before WW1 began. In this historical context too, the book is interesting, and the tediousness of the opening chapters is justified if you keep it in mind that it is meant for Childers's sarcasm against indifference and complacency among the English people (talking of English complacency, we remember later in 1938, immediately before WW2, Alfred Hitchcock again uses it as a satire in his thriller "The Lady Vanishes" with brilliantly silly two British gentlemen who are more concerned with cricket games than surrounding danger). People don't change.
So, the book itself is still enjoyable, but these historical matters will make it more precious; after all, it is one of the proof how people reacted to the coming change in the history of mankind. And if you're interested in this kind of book (I mean, books reflects German-England relationship), check out "The Battel of Dorking" by George Chesney (written in 1871) and "When William Came" (in 1913) by Saki once.

I say, Carruthers, well done old chap
By Peter Reeve
In deciding whether to read this novel, there are some things you should know:

Firstly, it is beautifully written. It is a classic piece of prose literature. Long descriptive passages evoke a wonderful atmosphere and sense of place. The characterization is sharp and accurate, and the dialogue is convincing.

Secondly, this is not an action-packed spy thriller. The story unfolds slowly and is somewhat linear, without the shock twists and turns that would be expected from a contemporary spy story. Having said that, you are better reading the book without knowing exactly what the answer to the 'riddle' is. Many of the reviews here on Amazon contain the spoiler and the blurb on the back of the Penguin Red Classics edition has it too. You have been warned.

Next, there is a lot about boats and the sea. If you are any kind of boat enthusiast, you will love this book. If you are not, or are positively averse to the ocean, then you will find the lengthy descriptions of tacking and sounding, reefing and kedging, to be rather wearisome. This is essentially the adventures of two Englishmen in a boat.

The opening chapters are extremely funny at times, as the hero discovers that his yachting holiday isn't going to be quite the luxury excursion he envisaged. The first half of the book is a delightful comedy of manners, but the mood gradually changes as the tension builds.

It is a book of its time - the end of the nineteenth century and the build up to the Great War. As such, it gives remarkable insights into the culture and attitudes of the period. The reference in the first sentence to 'black faces' may bring a few modern readers up short. The hero Carruthers (a name which has since become a parody) is a true-blue British hero -- honorable, brave and determined. I was forcibly reminded of Bulldog Drummond and of an adventure of his - Bulldog Drummond at Bay - published just before World War II, containing the same urgent (and uncannily accurate) warnings about German military buildup. But Carruthers is far more sympathetic and believable a character than Drummond, and Childers an immeasurably better writer than Sapper.

A great strength of the book is its authenticity. One can believe every moment actually happened. All the characters are fallible and plans invariably go slightly awry, just as in real life. And you can almost feel the mud and the cold wind and rain of the landscape - or rather seascape - in which most of the events take place.

A masterpiece, for lovers of great literature.

Solid read, but only in context
By Seth Merlo
I bought The Riddle of the Sands to use in an History essay for university where I was looking at how the spy was portrayed before World War I. As one of the more popular titles from that era of 'invasion literature,' Childer's work certainly fit the bill. It is the story of two men sailing around the Frisian Islands trying to uncover a German plot to invade the north of England. That's basically it in the way of plot. It was Childer's way of calling attention to what he believed where Britain's insufficient North Sea defenses, and the real possibility of a German naval invasion. He succeeded in that endeavour and the North Sea defenses were eventually strengthed, which you could view either as a testament to the power of this novel, or to the 'great underlying problems and increasing pessimism' felt throughout Europe (to quote Ruth Henig), in the lead up to World War I.

Whichever view you take, the novel has a depth of characterisation that is quite remarkable for a first attempt at fiction. Davies and Carruthers are representative of the two poles of English class/social structure at the time, with the inarticulate, yet perceptive everyman Davies teaming up with well-mannered and intellectually capable Carruthers, figurative of the way that all aspects of British society would need to come together to face the coming invasion. However, the fact that this was Childers' first and only novel begins to show in his pacing. This is hardly the 'cliff-hanger' that Milt Bearden claims it to be in his brief 5-page introduction. However, Childers' purpose was not to write a thrilling page turner, but a warning against German invasion. To really enjoy this novel, you have to read it in that context, otherwise you'll be thinking 'what's the big deal?' There is relevance to our contemporary situation, given the whole 'invasion' theme, but to understand that connection, you need to be aware of the reasons for Childers' decision to write this book, and, by extension, the motivation of his characters.

This Modern Library edition does offer some background in Bearden's introduction. Enough to give the casual reader some brief historical context, at least. It follows the Modern Library's tradition of having authors from relevant and related fields offering their thoughts, rather than the academic/scholarly approach that Penguin or Oxford take. The problem here though is that it is too brief to offer any real insights. There is also the standard Modern Library reading guide, offering questions that range between vaguely thought-provoking to superficial. I don't know why they bother with these reading guides, especially at the expense of a decent introduction. However, if you're just after the story without wading through the academia of the Oxford World's Classic release, then this is the version you're after. Plus, Modern Library's cover art is always so much nicer to look at!

Warren Buffett - an Investography, by Chellamuthu Kuppusamy

** Revised version published on 19-Jan-2014 **

Interesting account of world’s most successful investor. The book gives a detailed information on how a boy from Omaha became most revered man for the investors around the globe.

Warren Buffett had been the wealthiest man in the world. He has been number two and number three. He accumulated every penny of his fortune from the word go. Not only that. He multiplied in many times and helped whole lot of his shareholders becoming millionaires in that process. He is a standing example that success in stock market is nothing but manifestation of commonsense and high school mathematics.

Contrary to the popular belief that you should be in Wall Street to operate in financial world, he stayed back in Omaha and inspired average men and women like us that any one of us can beat the market filled with self-styled experts. He mockingly said, “Omaha is as good a spot as any. Here you can see the forest. In New York, it's hard to see beyond the trees”

He focused his time, energy and capital into meaningful investment opportunities. In his own words: “I'd rather have a $10 million business making 15 percent than a $100 million business making 5 percent”

He developed a clear conviction which directed his investment decisions. He kept on remembering the words ‘You are neither right nor wrong because the crowd disagrees with you’ of his mentor Benjamin Graham, and acted upon his ‘Buy when others sell and sell when others buy’ mantra. He said, “You are dealing with a lot of silly people in the marketplace; its like a great big casino, and everyone else is boozing. If you can stick with Pepsi, you should be okay.” Buffett strongly recommends to turn a blind eye to all stock recommendation from brokers. If asked why, he would say: “Never ask a barber if you need a haircut.”

When the markets peaked he had the mental strength to hold his nerves by saying, “I feel like an oversexed guy on a desert Island. I (didn’t) find anything to buy”. When everyone shied away from equity investment he jumped in declaring, “I feel like an oversexed guy in a harem. This is the time to start investing”

Though he kept on saying that a fat wallet is the enemy of superior investment results and his past achievements could not be replicated in the future, he kept on beating his own estimates and continues to add wealth to Berkshire shareholders.

Perhaps no other practicing capitalist has done so much towards investor education and improvement of corporate accountability as Warren Buffett. On top of that, he has pledged to give away his hard earned money back to the society through philanthropy, instead of passing on the estate to his heirs.

Buffett said, “The market, like the Lord, helps those who help themselves. But, unlike the Lord, the market does not forgive those who know not what they do.”

This book chronicles his transformation from a little known boy to world famous investor, both in terms of wealth and wisdom. Should benefit common public and investors alike in helping themselves.

Good on Buffett But Poor on English
By A. S. Keir
All in all, this is an interesting book. However, it was clearly not written by a person for whom English is the primary language. If you can plow through all of the language problems, you can get the gist of Buffett's genius.

Even though I enjoyed learning about Warren Buffet's achievements, I was appalled by the gross grammatical errors, missing words, and redundant passages throughout the book. It is in serious need of being rewritten!

A good intro book to Buffet but nothing new to those ...
By Rohit Ojha
A good intro book to Buffet but nothing new to those who already follow him.

Gives a good overview of how Buffet developed into the person he is. Anything written on Buffet is bound to be a good learning. The book contains excerpts from Annual letters of Berkshire Hathaway to narrate Buffets response/opinions on market conditions. Unnecessary (for us) details of his failed marriage form a chapter of the book.

Great fun!
By Studio602
This is a great book for beginner/intermediate flutists. I picked it up to play some of my favorite classics, and was very impressed by the selection. They have everything from cute radio jingles to typical "church" songs. There is definitely something for everyone, although an experienced flutist looking for a challenge will probably be disappointed.

Lots of fun, would definitely recommend!

Sexuality in World History (Themes in World History), by Peter N. Stearns

'Expansive and accessible, Peter Stearns' Sexuality in World History offers a much needed introduction to histories of sexuality from a global perspective.' – Mary Spongberg- Head of Department of Modern History, Macquarie University, USA

This book examines sexuality in the past, and explores how it helps explain sexuality in the present. The subject of sexuality is often a controversial one, and exploring it through a world history perspective emphasises the extent to which societies, including our own, are still reacting to historical change through contemporary sexual behaviours, values, and debates.

The study uses a clear chronological structure to focus on major patterns and changes in sexuality– both sexual culture and sexual behaviours– in the main periods of world history, with comparison and discussion across cultures and societies. Topics covered include:

  • issues involved in studying the history of sexuality
  • the sexual implications of the transition from hunting and gathering economies to agricultural economies
  • sexuality in Classical societies
  • the post-Classical period and the spread of the world religions
  • sex in an age of trade and colonies
  • changes in sexual behaviours and sexual attitudes between 1750 and 1950
  • sex in contemporary world history.

The book is a vital contribution to the study of world history, and is the perfect companion for all students of the history of sexuality.

Review
'It is... impressive that Stearns provides a concise, readable overview of the topic from the beginning of settled agriculture to the 21st century and covers most areas of the world without sacrificing nuance or oversimplifying his subject. This book synthesizes a large body of secondary literature using a fresh, interesting approach...He is careful to emphasize that no single statement about sexuality can truly encompass the full range of human experience, but he offers a thoughtful analysis of the major trends over time. An excellent introduction to a large and growing body of scholarship.' Choice (Outstanding title)

Excellent.

Mercy but Peter Stearns is prolific. Not only that, but his works are well written and informative. This little book explains clearly how since the beginning of agriculture all cultures have developed patriarchies only successfully challenged during the past 150 years. It is particularly interesting how cultures have both clashed and mutually influenced one another in distilling ever changing sex and gender roles.

not detailed enough.
By Simon
I really didn't learn anything from this book. This book really glossed over many things and never really got "into" the subject matter until the imperialist era. The auther also used a very vauge tone that contained little actual information.

All that was said more or less about hindu, ancient chinese and native american sexuality is that is focused more on pleasure than western and that europians viewed these cultures as "exotic." He never explained what any of them were like. He mentioned ancient sex manuals but never what was contained in them. He seemed to really really want to discuss europian attitudes and exploitation of native and eastern women. He also did go somewhat into Victorian ideas (the other side of the same theme.)

All in all this book was way too short to do what I wanted it to do. I'm in the middle of Sex in History by Reay Tannahill and I find it to be a much better "starting place" book for sexual history.

Rebel Gold: One Man's Quest to Find the Hidden Treasure of the, by Warren Getler, Bob Brewer

As a boy growing up in rural Arkansas, Bob Brewer often heard from his uncle and his great-uncle about a particular tree in the woods, the "Bible Tree," filled with strange carvings. Years later he would learn that this tree was carved with symbols associated with the Knights of the Golden Circle, a Civil Warera secret society that had buried gold coins and other treasure in various remote locations across the South and Southwest in hopes of someday funding a second War Between the States. These secret caches were guarded by sentinels, men whose responsibility it was to watch and protect these sites. To his astonishment, Bob discovered that both his uncle and his great-uncle had been twentieth-century sentinels, and that he had grown up near an important KGC treasure site.

In Shadow of the Sentinel, Bob Brewer and investigative journalist Warren Getler tell the fascinating story of the Knights of the Golden Circle and the hidden caches the KGC established across the country. Brewer reveals how, with agonizing effort, he eventually deciphered the fiendishly complicated KGC codes and ciphers, which drew heavily on images associated with Freemasonry. (Many of the key KGC postCivil War leaders were Scottish Rite Masons, who used the cover of that secret fraternity to conduct their activities.) Using his knowledge of KGC symbolism to crack coded maps, Brewer has located several KGC caches and has recovered gold coins, guns, and other treasure from some of them.

Shadow of the Sentinel is the most comprehensive account yet of the activities of the KGC after the Civil War and, indeed, into the 1900s. Getler and Brewer suggest that the clandestine network of KGC operatives was far wider than previously thought, and that it included Jesse James, the former Confederate guerrilla whose stage and bank robberies helped to fill KGC treasure chests.

This is a rousing and provocative adventure that weaves together one man's personal quest with an intriguing, little-known chapter in America's hidden history.

From Publishers Weekly
Conspiracy connoisseurs tired of contemplating whether Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone will feast on this tale of the 19th-century doings of the Knights of the Golden Circle. According to treasure hunter Brewer (aided by Bloomberg News editor-at-large Getler), who attempts to unravel their secrets in hopes of finding millions of dollars of hidden gold, the KGC was a sinister group of influential Southerners intent on engineering the secession of Southern states. They supposedly conspired to split the 1860 Democratic convention so that a weak candidate would emerge, guaranteeing Lincoln's election and support for secession-a deep game indeed. Losing the Civil War sent them underground, where, the authors say, political theorist and KGC member Jesse James, whose death they faked, led them to amass a fortune primarily through the pedestrian crimes of bank and stagecoach robbery and, more creatively, by collecting a multimillion-dollar award from Mexican Emperor Maximilian as repayment for aiding Maximilian's tottering regime. They hid their treasure, preserving knowledge of its whereabouts through a series of devilishly complex symbols known only to initiates for the day the South would rise again. Brewer believes some of his relatives were "sentinels" charged with protecting the KGC's hidden treasure. As fanciful as the group's history sounds (and the authors admit it is heavily based on circumstantial evidence), Brewer is convincing that the code existed and that he deciphered some of it, and his treasure hunting meets with modest success. In the end, this is a curiosity that will strain many readers' credibility, but leave a lingering "Maybe." Photos, maps.

From Booklist
Buried treasure! Secret societies! The South shall rise again! Yes, all the red-blooded elements of a boy's adventure story crowd this tale, except that, tall as it is, it purports to be true. While growing up in the 1950s, Brewer learned at his grandpa's knee that rebels cached gold in the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas to finance round two of the Civil War. After a career in the navy, Brewer dedicated himself to pursuing the story, written up here by reporter Getler. This exceedingly recondite story involves Scottish Rite Freemasonry, codes, cabalistic carvings on trees, Jesse James, a furtive entity called Knights of the Golden Circle, and a helluva lot of speculation. Still, Brewer is convinced the Confederacy's hidden treasury is still out there waiting to be dug up; alas, he unwisely confided one location to a rogue who allegedly absconded with the multimillion-dollar rebel stash. But Brewer perseveres, secret maps in hand, searching in, aptly enough, Arizona's Superstition Mountains. A saga that inveigles more than it convinces. Gilbert Taylor

Review
Dan Burstein, editor of the national bestseller Secrets of the Code: The Unauthorized Guide to the Mysteries Behind The Da Vinci Code Rebel Gold is a great adventure story and a fascinating treasure-hunt tale, but it is much more than that. It is an improbable, fantastic, and yet ultimately eye-opening trek through unknown, unseen, and unremembered episodes of American history. Jesse James, Confederate gold, the Knights of the Golden Circle, Freemasons, Albert Pike, the Ku Klux Klan, mysterious maps, codes, and symbols, echoes of the Knights Templar: It would make a great case for Dan Brown's Robert Langdon character -- except Warren Getler and Bob Brewer got there first -- and in non-fiction!

Conspiracies abound
By Jesse S. Walker
Is it true? Who knows. The real question is whether the book can keep my interest. At first it did a great job in laying out the story as the authors saw it. Unfortunately most of the last half of the book is spent trying to describe how he "located" the "treasure" spots. It also included maps which to my inexperienced eyes seem more of a stretch. I agree if there was a succession of Confederate treasure spots it would make sense that they all were laid out in similar patterns with markers. The question is whether you believe his explanation of markings. I have to admit it seems a bit of a stretch but who knows stranger things have happened I guess. The real problem is the book simply falls apart half way through whether true or not you no longer care.

An interesting read.
By Tony Hughes
Is there really millions of dollars of Confederate treasure buried in strategically hidden spots across the Continental United States? Yes according to Bob Brewer, co-author of this book.

Shadow of the Sentinel follows Bob's quest to discover and uncover various hoardes of suposed Confederate treasure using his analytical skills, a few clues and a whole bunch of hearsay and supposition. Amazingly he seems to have 'cracked' the code and been on to something. However, we never really find out of he is as he's either stabbed in the back by his erstwhile partner(s) or is refusing to dig as he doesn't have the proper authorisation.
Bob Brewer is a smart fellow; he also seems to be a naive fellow, too. If you're confident that you've discovered buried treasure, be sure you really know somebody before you tell them.
The book gives a detailed history of the Knights of the Golden Circle whilst Bob's treasure hunt is interspersed with tales of the Knights Templar, Scottish Rite Freemasonry, The Civil War and beyond.
A book certainly worth reading even if the conclusion is inconclusive.

The City Without Jews: A Novel of Our Time, by Hugo Bettauer

The subtitle of "The City Without Jews," A Novel of our Time, remains unfortunately true. Bettauer takes as his subject one of the oldest themes in Jewish history: exile. Exile appears constantly in Jewish literature and history. Written in 1923, the author imagines that anti-Semitism leads Austria to expel all Jews. He describes the expulsion, but does not linger over the suffering, humiliation, and trauma such expulsions have historically caused. Families may be split, and lovers torn from each other, proprietors may be forced to sell their businesses at ridiculously low prices, but Bettauer is less concerned with what happens to any one individual than with taking an idea and carrying to its ultimate conclusion no matter how ridiculous it may seem. This is very much a novel of ideas, not of character. One of the ideas is that the consequences of expulsion are as bad or worse for the country which throws out its Jews as they are for the Jews themselves.

Is it possible that I'm the first to review this?
By Lynn Hoffman, author:Radiation Days: A Comedy
The City Without Jews (Stadt Ohne Juden) was a
piece of social science fiction written in the

1920's. Its premise is that a future Austrian
government might decide to exile all its Jews
in order to reduce the competition for Christian
Austrians. After the completion of the forced
emigration, any Jew found in the city would be
put to death.
In the story, a well-disguised Jew re-infiltrates
Austrian society to find and court his Gentile
girlfriend. As the net closes in on him, the
consequences of a city losing its
intellectual and commercial elite starts to be
felt. Which will happen first? Will the lover be
discovered or the Jews readmitted?

This would all be a sweet liberal fable except
for a few things.

*First, this book was wildly
popular. It sold 200,000 copies in Austria alone.

*Second, a decade after it was published, the
Austriad goverment and people decided to commit
a far worse outrage against their Jewish citizen:
instead of exile, they were murdered and Austrians
comprised a disproportionate number of concentration
camp guards.

*Finally, to this day, the Austrian
government and people has been unwilling to
acknowledge that a crime was committed or to
recognize any moral debt to the survivors.

For those of us who want to believe in the power
of literature, The City Without Jews is a very
sad book indeed.

the forthcoming novel bang BANG from Kunati Books.ISBN 9781601640005

Perhaps its better, but then..

One needs to consider a work of a different place and culture to some extent as it may have seemed at the time, through a filter of culture and yet another of translation. Here the effects of time gone by is a third filter yet
The brief work seems prescient in predicting some length that Antisemitism could achieve. It certainly shows that there was a greatly-prevalent antagonism to Jews that could be noted by this writer, an Austrian Protestant.
The book is not quite 200 pages and strikes one as a moralistic fantasy, in line with the sort of writing one might expect of G K Chesterton. Yet, it has a bit less of the moral uncertainty of his works. It is a bit heady and sophomoric for my taste presenting Austrians mostly unfavorably and Jews mostly in glowing terms, perhaps a bit too simply sketched out, for the most part.
Ironically, the Jewish hero, Max, winds up being not only talented, wealthy and clever, but also shows himself to be a crafty manipulator, which fits him to the Antisemitic prejudices, reinforcing the concept of the scheming Jew.
Ultimately, the highly assimilated hero is accepted back in the arms of his country and his Christian near-fiance and her parents. In this and in the Jewish stereotype that came out, perhaps accidentally, the work really is 'of its time'.
The book was likely too favorable to Jews and negative to Austrians, despite its levity and brevity, as the author was assassinated a bit over a year after its publication.
The fact that removal of Jewish wealth was so harmful to the country may have been likely. One wonders whether a Nazi sympathizer, taking due note of this decided to aggressively strip such wealth and 'milk the Jews dry'.
