Vukan R. Vuchic, PhD, is UPS Foundation Professor of Transportation Engineering and Professor of City and Regional Planning at the University of Pennsylvania. much practical advice for transit planning

How to plan an urban transit system of buses and trains? Vuchic offers a text suitable to accompany an undergraduate course in urban planning. It describes many aspects of transit. Like the ability to have articulated buses that have capacities 50% greater than standard buses. By using these on dedicated bus lanes, overall transit capacity can be enhanced. We see how multiple public agencies need to cooperate, to let such methods achieve optimal potential.

Rail transit is extensively studied. Including the all-important aspect of scheduling. There is some maths required of the student. But the text is not a fully fledged foray into scheduling theory. Chapters have numerous exercises that help the reader gain some fluency in understanding scheduling.

Another related aspect is the geometry of transit lines. How to best lay out these lines. We see that there are systematic mathematical ideas that can be applied. It's not just some qualitative handwaving.

More than a book. Invest in Yourself!

My wife bought me this book for my birthday. It wasn't a hard decision for her - it was first on my wish list. I wondered about how much value such a small book could contain, but the reviews were so encouraging. I'm a relatively new grappler, but not new to martial arts. At 65 years of age, and a blue belt, I am most concerned with learning concepts that will promote a game that does not depend on youthful athleticism. I was not disappointed. This book was exactly what I needed in this point of developing my game. Instead of providing an encyclopedia of techniques, Professor Paulo gives solid principles that will make your techniques work. I already have a guard passing system I like; Now I can make that system work with much more efficiency and success!

And it isn't just the book! When you log on to Professor's site, you receive videos that go hand-in-hand with each principle in the book: Many more videos than you would get with the usual DVD set or phone App. And he doesn't stop there! He keeps in contact with you on a regular basis, with tips and additional videos that aren't covered in the book. It feels like he's adopted you as a personal student. It feels great to have a coach that actually makes contact with you. This is one of the most important and satisfying investments I have made in my jiu-jisu journey.

A must read for anyone in the martial arts, regardless of style!

I have been practicing and teaching martial arts for over 30 years. I have a submission wrestling team that competes at high levels in gi and no gi jiujitsu. This book opened my eyes to be able to organize and teach more clearly many of the principles I was already teaching. It also showed me some very fundamental principles that I have been skipping over. I have read many great martial arts books written by great masters and I can tell you this is one of the best I have ever read! This is a must read for anyone in the martial arts, no matter what style, because these 21 principles apply to most every aspect of the fight game.

More like 21 thoughts on BJJ

This book is more of a random collection of journal entries than anything else. It dabbles in being an instructional at times, but it's not effective enough that I didn't wish it just stuck to the stories. Some of the principles are not very original, everyone has heard the "BJJ as chess analogy" for example. Others stretch the idea of a principle, being instead a short story. Is the story of how you connected the film "Braveheart" to your BJJ training really make it an "immutable principle"?

I didn't finish the book, but not because it wasn't enjoyable. But it wasn't really a roadmap in the way I though it would be. Maybe a different title would have helped me set different expectations.

About the Author
Linda L. Belleville (Ph.D., University of Toronto) is adjunct professor of New Testament at Grand Rapids Theological Seminary. She is the author of 2 Corinthians in the IVP New Testament Commentary Series and a contributor to The IVP Women's Bible Commentary, Dictionary of Paul and His Letters and Discovering Biblical Equality.

Just about as good as you could want for a briefer commentary

Belleville's II Corinthians commentary is one of the best of the briefer treatements of this important but often underemphasized letter. I would say that the only rival at this level of detail is Scott Hafemann's NIVAC, which has the advantage of being a little later (and thus could benefit from Belleville's work and the scholarship since) and with more emphasis on applicational issues, whereas Belleville has a little more focus on the exegesis itself.

I like Belleville's approach for the most part. She seems to me to be much more balanced than some of the more detailed academic commentaries. She argues for Pauline authorship of the entire letter. She tends to favor seeing the letter as a unity, with some caution that certainty is impossible. She finds no absolutely convincing explanation about why the last few chapters seem very different, but she nonetheless does not take the differences to demonstrate their being taken from some other letter, and we should give the letter in its current form the benefit of the doubt in the absence of clear evidence. Overall, her exposition captures well the basic themes of this letter and how it ties in with I Corinthians and demonstrates both a familiarity with the literature on the epistle and an eye for how to interpret and apply its message in our contemporary setting.

Her goal seems to be to provide enough information from the best scholarship on the book to understand what Paul is up to in this letter without getting too bogged down in some of the more thorny problems. Sometimes she just refers to other scholarship when the details are tricky and the importance of the disagreement is less significant. She does give exegetical and text-critical notes at the bottom of the page, with a running exposition (not always verse by verse) taking up most of the space on most pages. It's hard to read both in order, however, since she does not use the notes at the bottom as footnotes. Since the commentary proper is not always verse-by-verse, it's difficult to figure out when to read the notes at the bottom. Other than that, the commentary does not seem like a scholarly reference work but feels like a book you can read.

For detailed scholarly work on this book on the level of the Greek text, try Murray J. Harris' NIGTC, and for a more detailed exegetical work without the detailed Greek I recommend the NAC by David Garland. But for this level of detail Belleville is excellent.

Excellent book for anyone seeking to understand Paul in the face of "modern interpretation". Ms Belleville is an excellent writer. She backs up her interpretation with solid research and presents it clearly enough to be understood by scholar and student alike.

Richard Thorpe is Professor of Management Development and Pro Dean for Research at Leeds University Business School. His research interests have included: performance, entrepreneurship, knowledge and leadership as well as research methods in management research.� His early career as a management trainee on a Clarks programme informed the way his ethos has developed. Following a period in industry his first academic appointment was as a researcher at Strathclyde University in the Pay and Reward Research Centre. There, as a consequence of the research conducted he developed close links with practitioners, intermediaries and policy makers, something he has strived to maintain as his career progressed. Common themes in his work are: a strong commitment to conducting research in collaboration with practitioners; a focus on action and change; an interest in and commitment to the development of doctoral students and the development of capacity within the sector. Richard has been past president and chair of the British Academy of Management and member of the ESRC Training and Development Board. He is currently chair of the Society for the Advancement of Management Studies.

For a resource text book, lacks page numbers

Purchased the Kindle edition for my current Msc studies and had intended to use it on my Ipad. However only noticed when wanting to cite information that the Kindle version does not have page numbers like the printed version.

Whilst it contains all the information of the printed version, it is useless for citation purposes. So now I have to invest double to obtain a printed version just to be able to cite/reference sections of the material in the publication.

This book is just difficult. It is hard to read, and hard to follow. It's as if the authors have their own language that they never let you in on.

Another overpriced text

This was a required text for a class I took online. I only needed it for the required homework questions at the end of the chapters. I started the semester reading the required chapters and soon learned that was unnecessary and a waste of time. The chapters were bloated with examples of situations from companies, some of which are now several years old and thus already outdated. In the business world, everything can change for a company quickly and thus using specific companies to demonstrate a concept can become inaccurate data before the next edition. I essentially learned everything I needed for the class from other free sources on the internet and economic news sites.
Also, considering that this book is already a couple of years old and has dated info in it, expect another edition soon. Thus students that have to buy this never know when they will get stuck with it because they can't sell it back. Though, I guess this is true with most texts.

I just found it to be useless considering that the same information is available all over the internet for free and in more practical sites.

Easy to follow with interesting and up-to-date content

Easy to follow with interesting and up-to-date content. Clearly discusses history, politics, and ideologies with relative examples. Contains several demographic charts and data tables. However, and I actually like this, the book contains no pictures. It's my senior year of college and I am glad the authors have geared this book towards 'grown-ups'. I hate paying hundreds of dollars for books full of stock photos and subtle ads for businesses. No nonsense. So far so good.

With little time to spare and a few days into the semester. Amazon Prime deliver this textbook right on time, and my fiancé was able to focus peacefully. Even I as a Psychology major and Minor in Sociology, found this textbook very interesting and easy to use. Thank you amazon so much and the Prime services worst every penny.
