Amazing young woman!

I thought this was a great book. Taylor is an amazing young woman. It was interesting to learn how she was bullied & how she got her parents to move to Nashville, how everything just fell into place for her. She writes some fantastic songs for young people & lives a good clean life for children to look up too. She makes a wonderful role model! Good book!

A great book about a good human!

Taylor has such a huge impact on her fans and I wanted to understand her better. She seems to make good decisions so often and I can she now how she does this. She is true to herself and her fans. I hope she continues for as long as she wants to. She is one of the few that understand you shouldn't want to become famous and then whine about it once you do. I'm sure there's times when she would like to be alone but she always stays in touch with her fans and tries to share what she's thinking with them. I'm 81 years old and not her biggest fan but I like her as a person.

One featured study reveals that suicide bombers (SB) were far from uneducated, poverty-stricken castaways of the lower class, but rather middle class "normal" members of society, very well-behaved and deeply religious. Although, we assume that SBs are seriously, psychologically, disturbed people, we discover that these are the very types of individuals rejected for suicide missions. Why? They might screw things up or get caught, expose the organization and invite retaliation. When you think about the coolness of the 911 attackers, this makes sense and is very, very frightening. SB's are not motivated by the desire for death, but life; for they seek to live in Paradise.
SBs far reaching motives are also explained: the instantaneous absolution of sins for themselves and possibly their families, 72 houris (none of which they may enjoy while they are alive), and revenge for a feeling of humiliation from the modern world (names withheld). Their willingness to commit murder is organizational in nature, i.e., as members of an army, and not from `a proclivity to die.' The flawed religious thinking of the suicide bomber is exposed too, when they falsely assert that killing one's self in battle is a proper Islamic religious ideal. On the contrary, killing enemies in battle is Jihad, not killing yourself, an idea which originated in the 20th Century. Why would God go to all the trouble of making you fit for eternal life, cleansing you in body and soul, and then ask you to blow yourself into nasty little pieces?
Sleeplessness and the endless repetition of texts and prayers are given as methods for deadening the senses of SBs, and as training to facilitate their departure from this world. This book is a real eye-opener and should be read to rouse those who slumber in complacency.

Boston Bombings got me thinking about this book

A friend got me thinking about where/if the Boston bombings fit in the historical and cultural trajectory of suicide missions. Although we may not yet know enough about the Boston incident to categorize it as a suicide mission, I recommended this book to my social networks because it is an incredible collection of deeply careful, interesting essays. It was one of the best books I read in grad school (public policy masters program). Although it is self-admittedly not a comprehensive taxonomy of all suicide missions in all contexts, the essays rely heavily on empirical evidence to frame important and sometimes unexpected questions. The work also serves the interested reader by offering exquisitely precise thinking on suicide missions (in both heroic and nefarious contexts), and also by being historically and culturally comparative (addressing Kamikaze, Tamil Tigers, Palestineans, Al-Qaeda, 9/11, self immolations with intent to kill others, etc). Really spectacular read for anyone trying to understand suicide missions which, tragically, are becoming an ever more relevant topic around the world.

Terrific book with excellent materials on non suicide terror and suicide in which one kills only himself to provide the most insightful approach to understanding the phenomenon of suicide terror while explaining the counter factual cases. Possibly one of the best books ever written on terrorism!

Consider Revising the Title

Perhaps I was misled by the title, but my first thought was the book was very thin for a dictionary- less than 100 pages. If you are looking for an A-Z LIST of aliments by sign, then you might like to add this book to your library. Apparently the explanation of the signs and planets in medical astrology are in her first book. Yeast is a condition referred to Pisces (Yeast: Pisces) yet in her description of Venus, she mentions sugar (something I knew). How did she come up with yeast for Pisces? This book will not help you with that question.

I bought the book because I had Bells Palsy and hoped to learn about the planets and aspects involved. It's under the B list - Bells Palsy: Aries, Uranus. That's as good as it gets. Thankfully I know that Aries causes inflammation, Uranus rules the nerves, Bells Palsy is caused from inflammation and trauma to the 7th cranial nerve which paralyzes the nerves in the face - ah, Aries governs the head. In my case Mars was square Uranus in my 1st house (how I look) the day I woke up with this condition. For someone without a background in astrology, I do not recommend this book.

Excellent reference

Title covers exactly what the book is, a dictionary, albeit not a descriptive one so it basically encourages one to explore further. However, without it, I would have been lost looking for the relationship of certain conditions to astrology. Would have given it five stars had it been more descriptive, otherwise a great, indispensible reference book.

At first I was concerned that the book had so few pages but I find that it covers more medical conditions than I thought it would. I have found the Astrological correlations accurate. A very useful volume.

About the Author
Yasser Seirawan is a three-time U.S. Champion, the 1989 Western Hemisphere Champion, and an eight time member of the U.S. chess Olympiad team. Good, but steep learning curve

This book aims to take the reader from beginner, possibly not knowing how the pieces move, to a player able to think and develop their game without getting wiped off the board quickly.
We start with the obligatory rules of the game. Yasser doesn't waste time, they are taught quickly and then boom, you are thrown into chess playing.
After learning the rules of the game, we are introduced to two basic checkmates, King + Queen vs. King, and King + Rook vs. King. No King + Bishop + Bishop vs. King, or the dreaded King + Bishop + Knight vs. King but that's ok as they are of greater difficulty. A beginner will do well to just learn the methods for these two mates.
All well and good, but nothing any other beginners book hasn't done before. Yasser now throttles up the pace and exposes the reader to 4 ideas, at least one of which isn't typically exposed to beginners. Force(material inequality), Time(piece development), Space(control of the board) and Pawn Structure. These will be tough to move onto for someone who has just picked up the pieces in my opinion but they are the next necessary steps.
Finally we have a collection of several short games where Yasser annotates the typical beginner mistakes that were made and why they are losing. This is probably the best part of the book and it does a good job of tieing together the four chapters on the concepts he taught. A glossary of chess terms, many not used in the book is also included.
As a foundation, this would be a good book for someone who really knows very little or nothing at all, but despite Yasser's easy style it moves fast and will require work from the reader.

Great for a fast learner

Say you already know just a little bit about chess (like the piece movements and rules) and are a sharp and quick learner. This is a good for you then. It moves along very quickly and gets into basic strategy in no time at all. If you are a kid, know absolutely nothing about chess or want to take it slowly then consider getting Learn Chess by Alexander & Beach or a more basic book for a Beginner. So what I am saying is this book is well designed for certain individuals and the only other book like it is Lasker's Manuel of Chess.

Good for someone who already knows the basic rules

This is NOT to be recommended for someone who is learning from scratch. It moves along way to quickly and gets to running before you have learned walk. Then why does it get a good rating of 4 stars?

This is a "good" book for someone who knows how the pieces move, knows the very basics of strategy and wants nothing more than a brief primer on anything before that, yet wants to get to the next parts of strategy. It doesn't overly focus on one area so it is a rather general book and a little difficult to understand where the author intended to fit this into the rest of his series. If you are more of a beginner then get "Learn Chess; a complete course" by Alexander and Beach which is far superior when it comes to covering both basic rules and strategy.
