Great for a "never owned a home" person

I bought this for my nephew who is a new home owner and was never really taught how to do things around the home. I skimmed through this and found it was very easy and descriptive reading...making it easy to understand for someone just starting out. He's a very smart quy and I'm sure he'll pick things up quickly!

About the Author
Len Davidson began collecting and restoring vintage neon signs in the mid-1970s, which led him to establish Davidson Neon Design, a custom sign business. In 1985, he founded the Neon Museum of Philadelphia to showcase his vast collection. Currently, Davidson lives with his wife, Judy, and son, Cory, in a house full of historic signs.

Wonderful Book!

This book succeeds on both the visuals and written text. The main appeal for most is going to be the pictures and this is filled with photo after photo of beautiful vintage neon signs. Every type of subject matter from across the country is here and they are nicely reproduced on glossy pages. Added to that are the great captions that go with each photo. You learn a little bit about the sign and the business that used the sign. This is an art from an era long gone and we're lucky to have this reference. My only complaint is that the binding is not the best for a hardcover book, but still four stars for the incredible content.

Great collection of pictures of NEON signs .... beautiful book!

I purchased this book for my son, who is starting out a new hobby, photographing vintage signs, (neon, especially)

and old motels, route 66, etc. He fell in love with this book, immediately, and it now sits on their coffee table, where it is readily

available to him, for reference, and on display for guests to see. One of the best (and most appreciated) gifts I've given to him.

Wonderful reference book

Surprisingly, the only book on the subject that I have been able to locate that details historic neon signs. The author does a wonderful job documenting these disappearing treasures. All other books Amazon offers regarding neon tends to focus on contemporary examples. I hope another volume is in the works showcasing additional neon signs that were not covered in the original book.

Though Revel's stated aim here is to examine why human beings ``neglect the genuine knowledge that is available to them and...base their conceptions and actions on false information,'' he ends up delivering mostly a tirade against the Left that becomes a vehicle for defending his earlier writings (How Democracies Perish, 1984, etc.). Revel's claim that he could as well take to task ``scholastic Aristotelian ideology'' as the ``more familiar'' Marxism sets his tone. Certainly the notion that ``we use our intellectual faculties to protect conviction, interests and interpretations...dear to us'' has merit. But Revel never explores this idea beyond applying it to the supposed acceptance of communism by Western thinkers and liberals who ``have always adhered to the official Soviet `truth' of the moment.'' He warns against the ``a priori trust in perestroika and glasnost'' demonstrated by duped Western democracies soft on communism; rails against the ``pigheaded Left''; and scolds the media for failing to credit the ``classic dictatorships'' of Franco, Pinochet, and Marcos for being better organized than their Marxist counterparts. A great book by a great french writer and thinker

I first read this book in the Spanish version, under the title "El Conocimiento Inutil" (The Useless Knowledge) and reread it again in English. Both times, I was amazed by the wisdom, clarity of mind and excellent writing of the author. According to Revel, we live in the age of information: never before, humanity has had such easy access to so much information. But quantity and quality are two different things. We are so buried in data, that most of the time we don't bother to check its validity. And, what is even worse: we frequently dismiss true knowledge available to us and prefer to base our beliefs and actions on false information. Twenty four years after the publication of the original version of this book, in French, Revel's quote is even more relevant and true: "The most powerful force in the world is lying".

Our future depends "on the correct or incorrect, honest or dishonest use of information." "Formerly ignorance was the enemy, today it is falsehood." Communism and Nazism are both dead, hence it's an interesting point that the Left wants to keep Nazism "alive," so to speak; apparently to sustain the myth that the Right is the danger which we must remain vigilant against, as they continue to trumpet the notion of collectiveness and anti-capitalism under other guises; as well as the notion that enlightened government can transform society if given the power to do so. In a way this is to be expected: "A school of thought that knows it is in a state of decline struggles even more fiercely to preserve its identity." Revel is not at all surprised consequently that French textbooks even into 1980 continued to embellish Sovietism. (I'd add further that Hitler denunciations still out number anti-Stalin comments 1000-1. Moreover, how many films touching on Lenin or Stalin have been made? Why is nothing on film about communism/Soviet brutality in Eastern Europe and the Baltics/Soviet Gulags/Red terror wholesale murderings/show trials & Soviet anti-semitism...just to name a few subjects that are ignored while Nazi issues/characters/events feature in countless films.) But just because the French Revolution, and its communistic offspring, can be seen to have proved a failure (in Eastern Europe, the USSR, Cambodia, Vietnam, Cuba, Angola, Mozambique, North Korea, et al) doesn't mean fans of such states' 'motives' have reconsidered their inclined views. As Lauret Fabius, the former socialist prime minister of France, has put it: "Socialism is a direction." As long as it can claim anything supposedly positive (Castro's famed health system, for instance) it gets a pass on everything else. That's why Stalin always got the benefit of any possible doubts from those so inclined; and such explains the Left's silence when the Soviet Union signed a pact with Hitler, and later when it invaded Czechoslovkia, Hungary, & Afghanistan (all the while railing against the WEST over Pinochet's Chile and South African apartheid & other such states led by more Rightist governments). Last year on TV I saw a prominent author (Simon Winchester) toss an aside that "of course I have great admiration for the Rosenbergs." This notwithstanding the publication, just several years ago, of the "Venona" cables & Russian documents which conclusively prove that the Rosenbergs were traitors. Such is the epitome of Mr. Revel's point: "Arguments/discoveries are not imposed by intellectual conviction." Revel quotes Jonathan Swift in support of this notion: "You cannot reason a person out of something he has not been reasoned into." Such folks are simply going to hold onto their instinctive beliefs & society is going to simply have to wait them out. Revel compares the dynamic to the development of science. Scientific theories often do not triumph over other theories on facts, but rather by having the staying power to hold their own while the previous theories wither on the vine (and the previous theory adherents give way to a succeeding generation). In short, with all our development in education, the accessibility of travel & information, etc., we as a people are not getting any wiser. Society is getting wiser, however, but unfortunately at high cost. (The lesson of failed communism, of government not being able to transform society without recourse to terror, cost tens of millions of lives.) Things would be a lot easier, of course, if people tried using their own brains more. Once something fails over and over again it behooves us to recognize that fact and consider alternate means to achieve the goal at hand.

Words for Modern Times

Here is a philosopher who is sadly no longer with us. He writes in a terse and directed way about the evils of our time...which grow exponentially each day. From "lost" emails to lies and distortions by our press and TV talking heads to slanted editorial writing in supposed news reporting to a dormant and confused academic milieu, we are rapidly racing (rather than slouching) toward oblivion. Revel was ahead of his time and would probably not be surprised by the descent and loss of truth and bravery in the modern world. What he would say about the no name policy for our open enemies in the world today might give us a glimpse of truth in a time of growing fabrication and cowardice.

The different departments in the laboratory are discussed, along with the types of testing that are performed, equipment used, and quality control systems."

About the Author
Dr. John W. Ridley has a wealth of experience in the medical field, in a variety of positions, both civilian and military. He began his career as a patient care technician before going to serve during the Vietnam conflict as a combat medic. He then worked as a trainer for combat medics, until he received an appointment to the laboratory training program at Brooke Army Medical Center, Ft. Sam, Houston, TX. He served three years of active duty as a medical laboratory technician and then pursued his BS degree in Zoology and his Master's of Education degree, both from the University of Georgia. During this time, his work experience included positions as a laboratory technician and later a technologist, then a clinical laboratory manager and as an officer in several US Army Reserve Combat Support Hospitals, rising to the rank of Colonel. Dr. Ridley completed a Ph.D. in Health and Human Services shortly after completing a tour of duty in Desert Shield/Desert Storm. He then completed his education as a registered nurse, which allowed him to incorporate the critical clinical perspective into his role as an educator, which began in 1992, and continues today. Dr. Ridley is currently the Director of Medical Laboratory Technology at West Central Technical College in Waco, Georgia.

Elementary introduction

This book gives an informal overview of the mathematical formalism of statistical mechanics with mathematical rigour not emphasized. There have been many developments in mathematical statistical mechanics since this book was published, particularly in the area of exactly solved models in statistical mechanics and vertex models. This book could be used as an introduction to these developments, in spite of the fact that the mathematics used in them is not covered in this book. Only very rudimentary mathematical tools are used therein. That is not to say that a beginning student interested in the mathematical aspects of statistical mechanics could not gain anything from the reading of the book. There are some very clear presentations of the following topics: 1. A detailed derivation of the Boltzmann equation. 2. A proof of the Poincare theorem, which states that a finite-energy mechanical system in a finite volume is recurrent. 3. A proof of the Liouville theorem, which gives the incompressibility of the flow of points in phase space. 4. A proof, using the Boltzmann "Stosszahlansatz", that the Kac ring model approaches equilibrium. 5. A proof of the existence of the thermodynamic limit for "van Hove potentials", i.e. those that have a hard core and an attractive tail. 6. The explicit calculation of the partition function for the Tonks and Takahashi gases, the Curie-Weiss model, and the one-dimensional Ising model. 7. The Onsager solution of the two-dimensional Ising model. 8. The combinatorial solution of the two-dimensional Ising model. 9. An Ising model for the DNA molecule.

This is a very interesting book. The author introduces Classical Statistical Mechanics through several historical examples (Boltzmann distribution, Maxwell distribution, etc.) then he gives an axiomatic interpretation of micro-canonical, canonical and grand-canonical distribution. Last chapters are dedicated instead to applications of Statistical Mechanics in Natural Sciences (expecially in Biology).
The mathematical skills required to the reader are not high although he's supposed to be quite "independent" to develop all the calculations by his own.

The title of this book lacks a question mark, but it needs one, because sociology professors Levin (The Violence of Hate, etc.) and Rabrenovic (Community Builders) ask far more questions in this hollow book than they answer. The project they have outlined, one made more immediate after September 11, is to understand hatred—and how that hatred so often leads to violence. Unfortunately, the project becomes mired in analytical quicksand. The problem is one of approach, and the authors include far too many isolated incidents and long-standing geopolitical disputes to offer a cohesive argument about, or prescriptions for, the admittedly complex nature of hatred. Rather than careening from instance to instance to diagnose the apparent pandemic of hatred (in the space of two pages, the authors move from Nazi Germany to violence against females in Uzbekistan and the anti-Semitic graffiti of disaffected youth), Levin and Rabrenovic would have done better to use fewer examples and offer more analysis to yield more valuable conclusions. Instead, they dance around the role in hatred of fear, revenge, evolutionary psychology and other factors. Also disappointing is the authors' tendency to oversimplify otherwise valid causes of hate and prescriptions for it with statements such as "[L]ike attracts like. When it comes to their peers, human beings seem almost universally to be predisposed to prefer being among people like themselves" and offer such advice as "Those who are victimized should seek help from the proper authorities, and they should act accordingly." Noble and worthy statements, but the authors' project proves unwieldy within the confines of this slim yet sadly inelegant volume.

Written in the painful aftermath of the September 11 Attack on America, Why We Hate reminds all of us that anyone can become an innocent victim of hate. Hate cuts across cultural, racial, gender, national boundaries.

In the first chapter, the book's authors give an excellent overview of the changing meaning of the term "hate" since the 1980s. In its common usage, the term has shifted from its original meaning "an intense dislike" and has instead come to be associated with hostile feelings toward the members of some group of people based on race, religious identity, ethnic origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, or disability status. Due to this transformation of meaning, hate has become a useful way to interpret criminal acts in which the underlying motive involves hostile or biased behavior such as racism, sexism or xenophobia.

Levin and Rabrenovic explore how prejudice and stereotype fueled by hatred can spur inter-group conflict. The two sociologists attempt to explain why hostile sentiments emerge between groups and the circumstances under which this hostility leads to violence. Simple but fundamental questions as to whether human beings born with a propensity for hate and violence are examined scientifically. The authors conclude that hating "the other" is learned behavior rooted in the environment, in psychological factors, and in the socio-economic characteristics of society. As it is highlighted clearly in the book hate also pays off in many ways for those who use it: Thus, "violence has benefits - psychological, social, and economic -for those who embrace hostile and vicious attitudes toward those who are considered different."

Why We Hate provides us with a myriad of examples of the expression of hate from around the world--from the streets of Jerusalem through the long-term religious conflict between Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland to the stereotype-based racial offenses in the United States. Such examples are of invaluable importance for understanding the mundane character of hate violence as it differs sharply from depictions in movies or television series. The authors demystify hate violence tremendously and then offer undeniable evidence that "ordinary people" frequently play a major role in the most horrendous acts of hate violence under specific conditions. The deportation of Jews, Roma, Slavs, homosexuals, and mentally deficient people during the Second World War or the massacre in Bosnia a decade ago suggest strongly that seemingly harmless or trivial acts like hate speech, political propaganda, and pervasive stereotypes may over time escalate into large scale ethnic violence. Besides exploring the large variety of factors that cause conflict, the book also sheds light on the growing levels of impersonality and indifference as one of the precipitants of hate in our modern society. The authors discuss the role of the mass media in forming the basis of a hostile mindset in future generations of citizens and argue that the producers of popular culture have a major responsibility for filtering out hateful imagery.

The book does not leave the reader without some important resolutions. Just as all of us may be harmed by hate, we ordinary people hold also the key to provide effective solutions. Real collaboration on the community level, peaceful civic efforts, women's organizations, cultural tolerance, and more democratic leadership are only a few examples recommended by Levin and Rabrenovic concerning how to combat hate violence in our social environment.

The book provides an excellent overview for college students and intelligent laypeople, but will also be useful for scholars interested in learning about recent developments in the scientific inquiry into the roots of hate and violence.

This book was thoroughly painful to read at times

This book was thoroughly painful to read at times. Many times the authors make broad accusations towards specific types of people based on actions - for example, all people who listen to metal are Satan worshipers, and people who wear flags on clothing typically have worse attitudes towards Middle Eastern people. It was written shortly after 9/11 and as such feels a bit dated in regards to overall perceived attitudes. Despite its flaws it was a useful look into hate, providing many possible motivations for hate crimes.

He is currently providing systems support for a campus network at a Medical Center with national affiliations. Scott is also a contributing author for Snort 2.0 Intrusion Detection (Syngress Publishing, ISBN: 1-931836-74-4). Ido Dubrawsky (CCNA, SCSA) has been working as a UNIX/Network Administrator for over 10 years. He has experience with a variety of UNIX operating systems including Solaris, Linux, BSD, HP-UX, AIX, and Ultrix. He was previously a member of Cisco's Secure Consulting Service providing security posture assessments to Cisco customers and is currently a member of the SAFE architecture team. Michael Sweeney (CCNA, CCDA, CCNP, MCSE) is the owner of the network consulting firm Packetattack.com. His specialties are network design, network troubleshooting, wireless network design, security, and network analysis using NAI Sniffer and Airmagnet for wireless network analysis. Every traveler's guide to Asia!

I've been saving up for my Asia trip for over a year now. The trip I have planned is an extensive one. I’m planning to cover Philippines, Thailand, Hong Kong and Japan. I’m not a newbie traveler but It’s always a good idea to be well informed.

I came across this book while looking for an All- In – One Asia travel guide book. I don’t want to carry loads of different books with me. Aside from it’s physically exhausting, I really don’t have the patience to read through very detailed travel guides. This book is just perfect for me.

The Rough Guide To Asia On A Budget offers a lot of insight about the countries and their cultures. It includes a number of transportation means to fit your budget. I found it to be quite helpful especially when I planned my detailed itinerary. It features the Go—To places and what to do there. I just love how compact it is but still informative. If you’re planning to visit Japan, you might want to grab a copy of Stephen William’s book entitled Tokyo: Helpful Tips To Fully Maximize Your Stay In Japan’s Capital. It covers a lot of historical places that you shouldn't miss out on.

okay but doesn't warrant a 4

I used it for my 8 month trip in Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Cambodia, Thailand and Philippines. It was sketchy at times but a adequate starting guide book. I wouldn't rely on it some countries like Indonesia (Bali & Lombok) but it was comprehensive in Thailand and Singapore. Use it as a rough guide and nothing more - I loved the one written in the Philippines.

Was great. This was the only resource I took with me for a 3+ week trip to Southeast Asia. I used it to figure out where I would go after each city and made it much easier to get around. It also was really good at providing with a rough guide for costs so that I didn't feel so unsure about whether I was paying too much for anything.
