An excellent read by the premier historian of early Dutch history

Motley is the premier historian of early Dutch history. Although this is the "student" version it is extremely detailed and brings the Dutch quest for independence to life. His characterization of William the Silent ranks with C. V. Wedgwood's classic biography. The Duke of Alva's cruel tyranny and the activities of the Council of Blood (one of whose members habitually slept through heresy trials, awaking only to call for the death penalty) are related in hair-raising detail. Motley roots for the Dutch, but on reading the facts no one would blame him. An excellent read..

An awesome book!

I read this book because I was using Aptana from some time, but I cannot use it at its best. This book helped me to better understand how to use some useful things such as perspectives, how to use the uptana plugin for debugging my JavaScript code and how to work with the integrated Git. The book is really helpful for a beginner (as the title say) but it can be also used by an advanced user for improving his knowledge of Aptana. I like very much books with this approach, with less annoying theory and more pratical tutorial.

Guide and reference book

Aptana is my IDE since many years and I develop different languages with this IDE for Web Development. The book provide information for starter and power users, an excellent and in-depth guide to using the IDE. The book is more as documentation, often you find tips and background for more effectiveness on the daily work with Aptana. It is an excellent source for anyone interested in gaining the most from Aptana Studio and optimizing their workflow.

Only a small advice for the four stars. I think the pages about install on different operation systems is not useful. Users, there use a IDE, can install a application on her system. Maybe it is helpful for other users, but I see not a sense.

I have been using Aptana Studio for many years now and it is my favourite IDE for web development. This book provides an excellent and in-depth guide to using Aptana Studio. It covers the very basics from installation and setup, to the more advanced features that Aptana provides. This book has made apparent the vast array of features of Aptana Studio, many of which I was previously unaware of. It is an excellent source for anyone interested in gaining the most from Aptana Studio and optimizing their workflow.

A great little book. One of at least three on biblical holy places by Meinardus that centers on St. John of Patmos giving the reader a good sense of Revelation. Up until reading this book my opinion of Revelation has been mixed at least, but Meinardus puts a wonderful human, historical, and archeological face on the New Testament book reviled by Martin Luther and explained by Crossan (How to Read the Bible and still be a Christian) and Sumney (The Bible: and Introduction).

KEITH W. PRICHARD is Professor of Sociology of Education at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. He has received numerous teaching awards, and has earned the Distinguished Teaching Award six times from the University of Nebraska. His books include The Black Student's Guide to College Success (Greenwood Press, 1993).

McLARAN SAWYER is Professor of History of Education at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. In addition to coediting The Black Student's Guide to College Success, he has written several books and numerous articles.

Informative, concise and very helpful resource!

This is a great resource for anyone interested in working in Boston. The information compiled by George is concise, well organized and extremely helpful. It would be very difficult for anyone to gather all this data on their own. This book not only introduces people to the broad spectrum of industries and specific companies that exist within the Boston metro area, but it provides information on salaries and job titles that are very hard to come by. George Donnelley is an excellent writer and teacher. Students coming into the job market for the first time, or even those entering college and determining their field of study, should all own this book!

Great Introduction to OOP

I've read a number of introductions to object-oriented design and programming. This one is the best all-around introduction that I have seen. It starts in the real world, with a discussion of how one plans and organizes a task (sending flowers to a significant other) that requires more than a single person to get done. That's a pleasant change from texts that begin with Dauntingly Dry Definitions ("encapsulation", "inheritance", and my favorite, "polymorphism").
To the author's credit, he avoids launching into inheritance until Chapter 8, by which time he has laid enough groundwork to reduce the concept to common sense. Other concepts are presented in a similar manner.
Note that this book is a survey book, not an in-depth programming manual. You won't learn C++ or Delphi, or any of the other half-dozen languages used for the book's examples. And the book focuses on concepts, rather than implementation. you won't learn how to implement a Singleton pattern in C#, although you will learn what it is and why it is useful. Finally, the book assumes familiarity with traditional, procedural programming. This is not a Programming 101 text.
I would recommend this book enthusiastically as a starting point for anyone making the transition from traditional programming to OOP. If you are moving to the DotNet platform, I have created a list ("So you'd like to ... Transition to DotNet") with some other recommended texts.

I found the book good, but I didn't walk away feeling that it provided a good grasp of any but the most general concepts of OO. I would have preferred to see more examples of turning a problem into an OO solution rather than "here's how to write a class in Java, C++, etc...".

There are some errors in the book

As a scientist, I suffer from the annoying tendency to stress over every tiny little mistake, especially when they occur in textbooks. There were a number of inaccuracies in the textbook that is counterpart to this lab manual. That said, the labs outlined in the manual were generally very enjoyable and student-friendly. The processes behind the experiments were present, though rudimentary at best. There is little correlation between the chapters in the textbook and the experiments in the lab manual, making it easy to use the manual on its own. I would use this item again but would look for a different textbook.

This book is about Oracle XML programming. It covers many Oracle XML related topics like Oracle XDK, XML DB, JDeveloper, Oracle Text/Oracle Secure Enterprise Search (SES), and Oracle Application Express (APEX). For each topic, detailed examples are given and provided as download. I use the examples as a starting point to learn XML programming, Oracle XML DB and building Oracle XML DB applications.

The book is written a very readable style with plenty of code examples. I particularly like the tips and tricks in this book. This is the most up-to-date and practical Oracle XML programming book.

Not of much use

The pluses of this book are that it covers many Oracle XML topics and contains lots of examples.

The minuses are that many of the topics are not covered in any depth, the examples are barely explained at all and many do needlessly complex things which just obscures the point that the author is presumably trying to illustrate.

I am fairly proficient using the XML features of SQL Server and I was hoping this book would help me learn how to do the equivalent tasks in Oracle. Sadly it has not.

Nearly worthless. Barely explains anything about DBMS_XMLDOM and how to actually apply the scarcely described concepts, functions, and methods in the book to any real world scenarios. This is possibly the worst book I have ever purchased in my 25 years working in the IT profession. It's all about the what. Nothing about the why or how to do meaningful processing with the tools. Save your money.

Bridging Traditions for a Modern Audience

This book is academically sound with bountiful sourcing notes, but its real strength lies in the way the author refashions traditional esoteric studies with new perspectives that can be appreciated by both young modern readers and seasoned researchers. The underlying energy is synergistic and the theme is one of universal truths. This makes Williams' work unique in that it not only bridges cultural traditions but also the generations.

A Very Worthy Read

What I liked most about this book is its accessibility. Williams takes difficult subjects--quantum physics to a variety of threads in hermeticism--and links them together in creative and understandable ways. This is an astonishing feat for such a young man, who has clearly already embarked on a remarkable life journey. This is not another "quacky" New Age book; these are the ponderings of a young genius who is extremely well read and well versed in numerous mystical and esoteric traditions. He takes you on a trip through modern science and discoveries about the nature of conscience, then segues into the Ancient Egyptian Mystery Schools through kabbaleh to shamanism to alchemy to multiuniverses to the question of the evolution of consciousness possibly being embedded in our very DNA. If there is a recurring theme, it is the similarities between mystical traditions--and the idea that the history of human progress has ebbs and flows, and, perhaps, with a passing away of the present materialistic period, we are on the cusp of a new leap forward in spiritual consciousness. Read this book to join Jeff Williams in this leap as he lights a way. Looking forward to Volume 2.

Esoteric Excellence

Esoteric Science, Volume 1, is one of the first global examinations of cosmology and its relationship to contemporary science. Williams examines scientific research and the opinions of notable natural scientists to paint an image of reality as currently understood by human science. He then ventures into an illustrative journey through the esoteric traditions of the world, from Egyptian Mystery Schools to Shamanism and Alchemy, demonstrating congruities both between each of the individual traditions and between esoteric tradition as a whole and science. Science and spiritualism are again rendered as a single field by Williams' genius.
